Language Courses for Students of the Business and Economics Faculty


 

Set out below is information about required language courses and optional continuation courses.

In accordance with the Course and Exam Regulations (17 Feb 2010), students taking a B.Sc. in Business and Economics (General Programme, Business Information Systems or Information and Management Sciences) are required to complete the following:

Module Title Foundation module (Basis Modul): Foreign Language for Business Purposes
Module Provider Sprachenzentrum (Foreign Languages Centre), Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena
Entry Requirements Placement test at the start of each Summer Semester. Students are placed according to the levels described in the Common European Framework: B1; B1/B2; B2; B2/C1; C1; C1(+).
Previous Knowledge See above - only the placement test is required
Prerequisite for later courses This is a 'stand alone' module but is a prerequisite for students who wish to do the optional third semester (see below).
Availability The module runs every year, starting in  the Winter Semester
Length of Module Two semesters

Credits (ECTS) 6
Workload 60 hours attendance (30 per semester)
120 hours private study (60 per semester inc. exam preparation)
Module Content Students may choose any one of the languages that offer a course specialising in the language and culture of business (English, French, Spanish, Russian, German as a Foreign Language).
Module Aims Students will learn to communicate in the target language in business contexts and situations, in both spoken and written forms.
Requirements for Admittance to Exam Regular attendance & participation
Requirements to obtain the available ECTS points Written exam at end of 2nd Semester.
Further examinable components (e.g.: presentations, projects, written work) will depend on the level of the course and will be explained by the course leader.

Optional continuation courses - one semester (winter) - are also available in English for Business and French for Business. Students must have successfully completed the required course described above. The optional third semester concludes with an oral exam and participants receive a Certificate of Completion (Abschlusszertifikat) additional to the standard ECTS notification.

Please note: Students are required to pay a fee for the optional third semester.
