Our working group Polar & Bird Ecology is engaged in current issues of behavioural and population ecology of several bird species. Besides experimental field studies we apply genetic techniques (paternity studies, DNA sexing, AFLP). In Germany, protected bird species are the centre of investigation to provide baseline data for specific protection measures (especially Eurasian Jackdaw, Eurasian Pygmy Owl, Capercaillie).
Aim of our activities in the Antarctic are studies on the life history, diet and feeding strategies of polar seabirds (storm petrels and skuas). Furthermore, we conduct risk assessment studies to develop management plans for sensitive areas.
