The Collaborative Research Center 1278 "PolyTarget - Polymer-based nanoparticle libraries for targeted anti-inflammatory strategies" will be funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The goal of PolyTarget is to develop polymer-based, nanoparticulate carrier materials for pharmaceutically active ingredients for targeted therapy of diseases and syndromes, whose morbidity is characterized by an inflammatory reaction. at the Jena Center for Soft Matter (Laboratory of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry, in cooperation with the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology), Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Synthesis and formulation of polymeric nanoparticles for Raman spectroscopic characterization of their linkage- and interaction mechanism with hepatic stellate cells

The goal of the project is to develop nanoparticle systems based on synthetic and natural (polysaccharide) polymers that bear targeting functions for hepatic stellate cells, labeling functionalities for Raman investigations and drugs for hepatic stellate cell treatment. The synthesis of well-defined polymers using controlled polymerization techniques (e.g. RAFT, ATRP) and polymer analogous reactions is one focus of the PhD project. The second challenge is the formulation and characterization of appropriate nanoparticle systems. In a close cooperation with other scientists, the chemical sensitivity of linear and non-linear Raman-based imaging approaches will be utilized for the characterization of the interaction mechanism of nanoparticles and drugs with hepatic stellate cells and the investigation of their uptake kinetics.


  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in e.g., polymer chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry or a related discipline; candidates expected to earn their degree before September 2017 are welcome to apply
  • Solid knowledge of controlled polymerization techniques, polymer functionalization, and use in life science settings together with associated characterization science
  • Excellent technical skills in e.g.: Analytical Chemistry, in particular mass spectrometry, and willingness to interdisciplinarily combine synthetic approaches with tailored polymer characterization approaches
  • Readyness to collaborate with short timescale work in the field and accompany implementation
  • Enthusiasm to play an active role in the interdisciplinary research team of PolyTarget
  • Highly motivated and creative personalities, with an interest to shape their own thesis project
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English
