The Collaborative Research Center 1278 "PolyTarget - Polymer-based nanoparticle libraries for targeted anti-inflammatory strategies" is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The goal of PolyTarget is to develop polymer-based, nanoparticulate carrier materials for pharmaceutically active ingredients for targeted therapy of diseases and syndromes, whose morbidity is characterized by an inflammatory reaction. The integrated Research Training Group of PolyTarget is educating doctoral researchers in a structured, interdisciplinary training program. Close cooperation within the multi- and interdisciplinary consortium with researchers from Chemistry, Materials Science, Biology, Pharmacy and Medicine offers unique prerequisites for transferring the findings from basic research into applications (www.polytarget.uni-jena.de).

at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Macromolecular Chemistry, Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Macromolecular prodrug nanoparticles for antimicrobial therapy


This project aims at developing macromolecular prodrugs (MPDs) nanoparticle libraries containing two or more novel (or proprietary) drugs in well-defined ratios via the systematic synthesis and comprehensive high-throughput screening (HTS) of novel copolymer materials. Moreover, the introduction of cell-recognition moieties into the MPDs will lead to macrophage specific drug delivery systems. Ultimately, the MPDs will be equipped with phagolysosomes-targeting peptides to further enhance their activity. The use of HTS approaches in this project will enable to achieve an accelerated the selection of polymer and/or nanoparticle candidates with optimized molar mass, architecture, size, functionality and drug loading to enhance the delivery process of the selected anti-infective drugs.

Requirements:

  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in e.g., polymer chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry or a related discipline; candidates expected to earn their degree before March 2018 are welcome to apply.
  • Solid knowledge of organic synthesis (preparation of monomers), reversible-deactivation radical polymerization techniques, kinetics of radical copolymerization, polymer functionalization and use in life science settings along with associated characterization and analytical techniques (such as NMR, SEC, DLS, DSC, TEM, GC, GC-MS, ESI-TOF, HPLC, etc.).
  • Experience in the use of automated parallel synthesizers would be a plus.
  • Readiness and enthusiasm to play an active and collaborative role to interdisciplinary work in short timescales with different scientists from other research teams of PolyTarget.
  • Highly motivated and creative personalities with an interest to shape their own thesis project.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English.
