Why do I have to register my courses online with Onleila?
By registering your courses with Onleila, you create all of the documents related to your guest studies that are important for you, your home university and the Friedrich Schiller University. These are the Learning Agreement, the Course Map and the Transcript of Records. Only by doing so will you receive a confirmation (Transcript of Records) at the end of your stay, which lists the courses that you participated in during your guest studies at the FSU.
I don't need any ECTS-Points / Credits at my home university for the exchange. Do I still have to register my courses with Onleila?
Yes, you still have to register your courses with Onleila. It is important to register with Onleila because this will create all of the important documents that you need for your guest studies in Jena (Learning Agreement, Course Map, Transcript of Records). Only by doing so will you receive a confirmation (Transcript of Records) at the end of your stay, which lists the courses that you participated in during your guest studies at the FSU.
When do I have to register my courses with Onleila?
Before registering your courses with Onleila, you should attend the informational event. When you enroll, you will be told when and where the informational event will take place. This information is also available on the internet. Besides that, you should start by visiting all of the courses that interest you during the first week of lecture. After the first week of lecture, you should decide and then register your courses with Onleila.
Do I need to use Onleila if I am only in Jena to do research for a thesis paper at the end of my studies?
In this case, you should come into the International Office personally. Your documents will then be individually created. If you are attending courses (e.g. language courses) at the university along with doing research, then you must register these courses with Onleila.
Can I use Friedolin to sign up for courses?
It is not possible for international guest students to sign up for courses by using Friedolin. Please contact your instructors personally.
How do I sign up for an exam?
Talk with your instructors personally at the beginning of the semester and ask them if you can take an exam in the course and which requirements you must fulfill. Then sign up for the exam personally by talking with your instructor.
How do I sign up for a course?
When you have found a course that interests you, attend the course in the first week of lecture. Ask your instructor personally, if you may attend the course. Also ask them about any requirements there are for attending the course and about exams and requirements for taking these exams.
How do I use Onleila when I will be studying at the University of Jena for 2 semesters?
If you plan on studying at the FSU Jena for two semesters, then you must register your courses with Onleila each semester. To start, please only register your courses for the first semester. You may register your courses for the second semester when the second semester begins.
Do I have to attend the Onleila informational event?
Attendance at the Onleila informational event is strongly recommended. At the informational event, you will receive all of the important information for your guest studies at the FSU and you will have the chance to ask your questions. You will find out the dates for the informational event when you enroll.
Where can I find out about the courses that are offered by the language center?
The courses that are offered by the language center can also be found in the electronic schedule of classes, Friedolin. Click on "schedule of classes" ["Vorlesungsverzeichnis"], then on "courses open for students from all university faculties" ["Lehrveranstaltung für Hörer aller Fakultäten und offen für alle"] and then choose "language center" ["Sprachenzentrum"]. This is where you can see all course offerings for the current semester.

If you have questions about the content of your study program, about your courses or about creating a class schedule, then please turn to your Erasmus coordinator. If you have questions about organization, about Onleila or about your documents, then please turn to your contact person at the International Office.
I don't come from the European Union and I am not participating in an Erasmus program. Is the Erasmus coordinator still my contact person?
Yes. The Erasmus coordinator is the contact person for all international guest students at the institute. It doesn't matter if you are taking part in an Erasmus exchange or a different program.
Where can I find out about the Credits / ECTS-Points for my courses?
The information, which tells you how many credits you will get for your courses, can be found at the International Office's ECTS-Website. Choose "Credits of Institutes and Departments" from the column on the left-hand side. Then select your institute. There is a column on the right-hand side, where you can see an overview of credits. This can be used to find out how many credits you will receive for individual courses.
I am not able to provide my date of birth when registering with Onleila.
Please make sure that you provide your date of birth in this format: DD.MM.YYYY. If this doesn't work, then please try again at a later time.
What date should I list as the "End of exchange"?
Please list the date that you will leave Jena. If you do not yet know the exact date, then please provide the date that the semester ends. The summer semester ends on 30.09 and the winter semester ends on 31.03.
Which email address should I provide?
Please provide an email address that you regularly use. It is permissible to provide a private email address.
What do I do if my exchange program/scholarship is not in the list?
Select any other exchange program, but then inform the International Office of your real exchange program.
I can't find my course in Onleila's online catalogue. What should I do?
If you know the name of the course, the name of the instructor or the course number (this can be found on Friedolin), then you can search for your course in Onleila by using the search box. Type in a key word and choose the corresponding course from the search results. If you can't find the course by using this method, then turn to your contact person at the International Office.
What do I fill out in Onleila if I'm not sure whether or not I will take an exam in the course?
In this case, fill out "participating only". It is not a problem if you decide that you do actually want to take an exam at the end of the semester and receive credits for the course.
What do I do if information is missing from my course schedule / course selection in Onleila (e.g. name of the instructor)?
Ask this particular instructor to write in the missing information when filling out the Course Map.
Have I signed up for the courses by registering with Onleila?
No, you have not. When you have found a course that interests you, attend the course in the first week of lecture. Ask your instructor directly if you may attend the course and sign up for the course personally. Also ask the instructor about any requirements there are for attending the course and about exams and requirements for taking these exams.
How can I receive credits?
You will only receive credits when you complete a course by taking an exam. If you only participate in a course without taking an exam, then you will not receive any credits. Please note as well: If you have more than two unexcused absences in a course, then you will not be permitted to take the exam and you will not receive any credits.
What are ECTS-Points / Credits?
ECTS-Credits are not grades or marks; instead they are a sort of conversion system, which transfers time spent working into credits. Credits are given for all of a student's successfully completed achievements. The number of credits given per course depends on the average student work load. This work load is measured in hours. What types of courses are there?
There are different types of courses. The most common types are lectures, seminars, recitation and tutorials. The courses differ from one another with regard to what activities the instructors as well as the students do. A complete overview of the different types of courses can be found in the brochure "Guest Studies at Friedrich Schiller University".
What types of exams are there?
In order to successfully complete a course, it is necessary to pass an exam. This can, for example, take the form of completing a term paper, taking a written or oral exam, or giving a presentation. At the beginning of the semester, please ask what type of exam will be required in your course.
Where can I get my Learning Agreement?
After you have registered your courses with Onleila, the International Office will send you the Learning Agreement as a pdf file in an email.
Do I have to create a Learning Agreement with Onleila if I already have one from my home university?
Every international guest student at the FSU Jena is required to register their courses with Onleila and as such create a Learning Agreement. Only by doing so will you receive a Transcript of Records, which ensures that your achievements in Jena will be recognized by your home university.
Who has to sign my Learning Agreement?
You are required to sign the Learning yourself, and it must also be signed by the coordinators at your home university and the coordinators at the guest university. In both cases, that is the coordinator at your institute and the coordinator at the International Office.
Who should sign my Learning Agreement if I take courses at different institutes?
Have your Learning Agreement signed by the coordinator at the institute where the majority of your courses are taken. It is necessary to have the signature of only one coordinator.
Can the International Office send my Learning Agreement to my home university to have it be signed?
We can send your Learning Agreement to your home university by Fax or Email to have it be signed. If you would like this to be done, please bring the necessary fax number or email address and the name of the contact person at the International Office.
How can I change my Learning Agreement?
In order to change the Learning Agreement, you must re-register all of your courses with Onleila. Please provide your personal information at the beginning of the registration process. This information is not saved in Onleila and must be provided again every time. You will then receive an email with your new Learning Agreement as a pdf file, which you must sign and have signed by all of your coordinators. Please provide the International Office with a copy of the signed Learning Agreement.
Where can I get my Course Card?
After you have registered your courses with Onleila, you can pick up your Course Card from your contact person at the International Office.
I am leaving Jena, but my Course Card has not yet been filled out and signed by all of my instructors. What should I do?
Make a copy of your Course Card for each instructor who has not filled out the Course Card by the time of your departure. Give the copy to your instructor with the request to fill it out and send it to the International Office. It is absolutely necessary that you give the original copy to the International Office before your departure.
Where can I get my Transcript of Records?
When your Course Card has been completely filled out, signed and given to the International Office at the end of the semester, then we will create your Transcript of Records.
Where can I get the JCGS?
If you have received more than 20 Credits in one semester, then you will receive the Jena Certificate of Guest Studies from the International Office along with your Transcript of Records.
