When asked to summarize their experiences, two international students studying at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU) in Germany come to the conclusion that the FSU "offers very good integration and social life is very cheap," and that Jena "is a small comfortable university city with everything you need as a student at walking distance from the city center (cafeteria, university halls, library, international office etc). The universities are very good (with Friedrich Schiller as a top example) but the living expenses are not very high. The student community is very tight and you could get to know basically everyone. You can interact with local or international students more easily than in a big city."
Together with other reviews and ratings, the two above can be found on the online platform SteXX.eu where students share their study experiences and review their university abroad. Reviewers of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena on average awarded more than 9 out of 10 possible points and thus showed their great satisfaction with the courses and services offered. As an overall result, the University is honoured for its excellent international spirit: it is awarded the 'Excellent International Student Satisfaction Award 2016'.
Constant Improvement of Services
"We are very proud of this award," says Dr Claudia Hillinger, Head of the International Office at the FSU. "And the fact that, after 2014, we have received it for a second time proves that all our efforts have been worth it," she explains happily. Because behind the scenes, this achievement required many years of hard work. Considerable collective efforts were devoted to improving satisfaction among international students and thus the reputation of the University throughout the world. Not only the constant improvement of services offered by the International Office and the Division for Academic and Student Affairs when it comes to admission, student data management, and support, but also, of course, very good study conditions at the Faculties and the services offered by the Thuringian student union, the Studierendenwerk Thüringen, have contributed to earning this award.
Happy students are the best ambassadors for the University. And the number of applicants proves that the message is loud and clear. For the current winter semester once again, the Friedrich Schiller University welcomes more than 200 guest students, 100 participants in a preparatory German language course, and approximately 400 degree-seeking students from around the world. "The Excellent International Student Satisfaction Award is incentive and motivation for the whole University to ensure study conditions also for these new students that would deserve such an award," underlines Dr Hillinger.
On StudyPortals, around 173,000 students from around the world and 16,000 students from Europe have reviewed and rated their host universities. More information at: http://www.stexx.eu/.
