Head of the institute |
The foundation of the Otto-Schott-Institut in the year 1966 is closely connected with the appointment of Werner Vogel as a full professor of glass chemistry. The Otto-Schott-Institut is part of the Faculty of Chemistry and Geoscience of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. Today, the Otto-Schott-Institut is involved into the education of chemists, especially with respect to "glass chemistry/chemistry of materials" as well as of materials scientists. Besides, the institute is engaged in the education of other natural scientists and also medicine students. Since the number of students increased strongly in the past few years, also the teaching duties increased. |
| Research in Otto-Schott-Institut is focused on glass and glass-ceramics. With respect to the fundamentals, the establishment of composition/structure/properties relationships is the main topic. Here various glass systems, such as silicate-, borate-, borosilicate-, phosphate- and tellurite glasses are considered. With respect to the resulting properties, physical, chemical and biological properties, such as bio activity or resorptivity are studied. Special optical properties, such as optical non-linearity or laser activity are investigated in corporation with other groups. Structural studies are focused on spectroscopy, microscopy and electron microscopy. | |
| Glass-ceramics are of special importance for the Institute. Here, fundamental studies on nucleation, crystal growth as well as on the preparation of nano glass-ceramics and oriented glass-ceramics are carried out. | |
| In Otto-Schott-Institut, it is always intended to bring results of fundamental studies as fast as possible to an industrial application. Here, two topics should be mentioned: glasses for optical applications, such as laser glasses or glasses for laser optics and glass-ceramics, e.g. machinable, high strength or oriented glass-ceramics. | |
