3. Preparatory course (Studienkolleg)

Not all secondary school leaving certificates entitling the holder to study in the respective home country, are considered equivalent to the German Abitur. So applicants have to follow a preparatory course (Studienkolleg) first and take the assessment exam (Feststellungsprüfung) before entering the university.

As a rule preparation for the assessment exams takes one year. The Staatliche Thüringer Studienkolleg linksymbol is situated in Nordhausen, 150 km from Jena. The campus and student dormitories provide an ideal environment for studies.

A basic knowledge of German is required for the Studienkolleg. Students will attend German language classes. All other classes are held in German.

Please refer to the item 6 of the form "Application for admission" (Studienkolleg only!). It is important to specify the intended course when applying. So the applicant can be assigned to the corresponding course at the Studienkolleg. You can find a check list all alldocuments you have to send with your applications above.

4. Language requirements

Language of instruction is German. There are only some special classes taught in English.

Applicants from non-German speaking countries must take the language proficiency test DSH-2 (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Bewerber) as prerequisite for admission.

Other certificates accepted instead of DSH-2 are:

- Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung
- Das Kleine und Große Sprachdiplom (Goethe Institute
- Sprachdiplom Stufe II (Kultusministerkonferenz)
- TestDAF (level 4 in all four exams)

Information about DSH

Jena University offers a German language course preparing for DSH.

5. Restricted Admission Subjects

Since for certain courses the number of applicants is much higher than the places available they are subject to restricted admission and a selection process based on the applicant's average grade points of the secondary school leaving certificate. A certain percentage of places is reserved for international applicants.

Nationwide restricted admission:

  • EU citizens and applicants who gained their higher education entrance qualification from a school in Germany (Allgemeine Hochschulreife / Abitur) apply to

Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung "hochschulstart.de" ( former ZVS)

  • Other applicants apply to the International Office of Jena University

University restricted admission

  • All applicants apply to the International Office of Jena University.
