Which functions does the card perform?

·         Student ID

·         Library card (after you registered at the main library ThULB)

Who is entitled to obtain a thoska?

Everyone who registers at the University of Jena for the first time will obtain the thoska (student ID).

How much does the thoska cost?

If you register at the University of Jena for the first time, a fee of €20 is charged for production of a new card together with the tuition fees.

 

If your card is lost, damaged or older than three years, a fee of €10 is charged for production of a replacement card.

Do I receive a confirmation of enrolment with my thoska?

No, the thoska itself does not work as a confirmation of enrolment. When the thoska is sent to you, you also receive an identification number together with a PIN that you use to register at the University's data centre. The very same data are used to log into Friedolin (https:\\www.friedolin.uni-jena.de), where you can print a confirmation of enrolment and other documents. More information can be found here.

Where can I travel with my semester ticket?

The semester ticket is valid:

 

·         On all buses and trams in Jena.

·         On all trains in Thuringia operated by Deutsche Bahn, Erfurter Bahn and Süd-Thüringen Bahn in the second class.

·         The thoska may from now on also be used as a VMT ticket. More information can be found here.


 

Do I need a new thoska each semester? How do I validate my smart card?

No, once you received the thoska after registration, you will keep it for the length of your study in Jena. On the lower part of the card, you will find the validation stripe where changeable data is kept. If these data (e.g. transfer to another course, temporary withdrawal, reregistration) change, the imprint on your card needs to be updated.

 

In most cases, a validation will be necessary when you reregister for a new semester and want to expand the period of validity of your smart card.

 

Once the tuition fees have been transferred, you will be reregistered for the new semester at the University of Jena. If you want to revalidate the thoska, you have to use one of the validation machines. Your card will then be imprinted with course information and a new expiry date.

 

Please note that it might take a while until your bank has transferred the amount to Friedrich Schiller University Jena, so usually you can validate your card two weeks after bank transfer.

What happens with my thoska when I leave Friedrich Schiller University Jena?

You can keep the thoska after you left university, but it will lose its functions if you are not registered any more.

Please note, though, that you should spend your card balance entirely before leaving, as you will not get a refund.

In case you deregister before the official end of the semester - i.e. before 31 March or 30 September - make sure to complete the Deregistration Form which you get in the thoska Office. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the thoska Office at the Student Service Centre.
