Through Schiller, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel in close connection with Goethe, Herder, and Wieland, the department had become a center of philosophical thinking by the end of the 18th century. Since the late 19th century, the historical and philological fields have become more important than philosophy.  Seminars and departments were established in the same manner as they exist today.
