Christoph Matschie (MdB), Minister Anja Siegesmund, Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche, Prof. Dr. Michael Kaschke, Dr. Franz v. Falkenhausen, Prof. Dr. Klaus Dicke, Prof. Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert and numerous other prominent persons from politics, business, society and the university support the appeal as initial donors.

The coronavirus has reached the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena and poses great challenges for the university. Above all, the students are financially affected. They are no longer able to work part-time and thus cannot finance their living. Cafeterias that provide affordable meals have closed and parental support may no longer be available due to the changed economic situation. This puts students with children in particular in special need. International students also suffer hardship - they usually cannot rely on their parents when they live in areas that are themselves hard hit by the crisis.

There has never been a comparable situation before. Many students need quick and unbureaucratic help. For this reason, the Society of Friends of the University of Jena, together with the rectorate, has set up a flexible aid fund with a donation target of at least 50,000 euros. "We would like to help above all those who do not receive any other support and who normally keep their heads above water with side jobs", explains University President Prof. Dr. Walter Rosenthal. "We want to help to ensure that none of our students fall out of the net and that everyone can continue or complete their studies even in this crisis".

On behalf of all supporters, Dr. Bernhard Vogel, retired State Premier of Thuringia, said

"A great idea! Thanks to the friends and supporters of the Friedrich Schiller University for their initiative to help students in need quickly and unbureaucratically. I am happy to be available as patron and support this initiative. I call on all friends of the university - especially the citizens of Jena
