For many foreign students, studying at Friedrich Schiller University Jena offers a valuable experience of living abroad, while Jena students set off from here to spend time studying elsewhere in the world.

With the “Jena Outgoing & Incoming Students Information Day” (JOIN In!) on 3 May, the University of Jena wishes to give a helping hand to future students from other countries as well as their fellow students here. For this virtual information day, the University’s International Office and Master Service Centre have put together a varied programme.

University ambassadors

“There are currently more than 2600 students from other countries studying at the University of Jena and they open up 2600 windows on the world, give us new impetus and act as important ambassadors for our University when they return home,” says Dr Andrea Stiebritz, Head of the Division for Student Affairs at Jena University. “At the same time, we offer the international students a varied range of courses, an exciting environment for learning and research, and valuable intercultural experiences.”

To support this enriching partnership for all concerned, and especially to tempt more international students to come to Thuringia once the pandemic is over, the University of Jena has prepared a wide range of information and advice for the JOIN In! event.

“During various video calls and digital workshops in German and English, we will personally answer all the questions that people have about studying at the University of Jena, making it easier for them to opt for this university,” says Dr Claudia Hillinger of the University’s International Office. “This ranges from information about the study programmes on offer and language learning to very practical topics, such as living in Jena.”

Regardless of whether prospective foreign students want to spend one or two semesters at the University of Jena or whether they plan to do a whole study programme here or aim for a Master’s degree – there is specific advice for every group.

Network of 350 universities in 50 countries

“On this information day, we want to encourage students at the University of Jena to make that move to another country – as soon as the pandemic allows it. As a visiting student or on an internship, they can gain valuable international experience that will benefit them later in their professional lives or in a future research career,” says Claudia Hillinger. “To this end, the University of Jena offers the possibility of exchanges at 350 universities worldwide and is happy to help students organise their foreign stays at the relevant institutions.”

During the JOIN In! day, Jena students will report on their time spent studying abroad, for example in Spain or the USA. In online conferences, experts will provide information about application processes, funding possibilities and other matters that are important when planning a stay abroad. In addition, partner universities will be showing films about their institutions, while a quiz will test viewers’ knowledge of international topics.
