Who can take part in the training? In this workshop, international and German students at the University of Jena learn about cultural differences in relation to studying and university culture in general. If we know more about our environment, we can study more satisfactorily and successfully. This is important for international students in Germany, but also for Germans who want to go abroad.
Student buddies benefit by better understanding what things might be particularly challenging for their mentees and can therefore help them better - and perhaps also communicate better with them!
This helps not only during their studies, but also when living in a new country - or interacting interculturally in their home country - in general.
We will discuss these topics in the training:
- What actually is "culture"?
- Direct/indirect communication
- How do I express criticism?
- Expectations and personal initiative: what are the tasks of the university, what are the tasks of the students?
- Interaction between lecturers and students
- Dealing with rules and agreements
- Culture shock and homesickness
We will work on these topics using various methods (case studies, discussions, short role plays) and develop strategies together. We will also discuss participants' previous experiences and questions and consider solutions to any problems.
Viola Stoehr is an intercultural trainer who specialises in workshops for students to prepare them for studying in Germany or abroad. She herself has experience of studying and teaching abroad. She is familiar with the challenges faced by international students through her previous work as a counsellor for international students and coordinator of a project aimed at improving the study situation for international students at a large university. She has already offered her intercultural training programmes through her company s.cope to more than 30 educational institutions since 2005.
