Central University Bodies

Friedrich Schiller University Jena governs its own affairs through academic self-governance. Its central bodies adopt the regulations that apply across the University, elect its leadership and guide its strategic development.

  • Senate

    The Senate is the University's central collegial body of academic self-governance. It adopts the regulations that apply across the University, among them its constitution and its appointment regulations, and elects the Equal Opportunities Officer and the Diversity Officer. It has sixteen members entitled to vote, drawn from all status groups; the President chairs the Senate.

  • University Council

    The University Council advises the University on developing its profile, on setting priorities in research and teaching and on the further development of its degree programmes; it also confirms the University's economic plan. It has eight members entitled to vote and further members in an advisory capacity.

  • University Assembly

    The University Assembly elects the President and the Head of Administration and Finance and adopts the University's structure and development plan. It brings together members of the Senate and of the University Council; the Chair of the University Council chairs its meetings.

  • Extended Executive Board

    The Extended Executive Board advises the Executive Board, in particular on structure and development planning, on the allocation of funds for research and teaching and on the organisation of studies. Alongside the Executive Board, the deans' offices and all status groups are represented; the President chairs its meetings.

  • Profile Board

    The Profile Board advises the Executive Board on opening up new fields of research and on the further development of the University's research priorities. Twelve researchers from the University and three external members bring together the perspectives of the profile areas LIGHT, LIFE and LIBERTY.
