International Legal Studies

In today's living and working conditions, good foreign language skills are essential for prospective lawyers if they want to be successful in their careers in the long term. An understanding of foreign legal systems and, above all, in-depth knowledge of European Union law and international law are also of great importance, especially for demanding occupations. With the certificate programme »International Legal Studies«, we offer students an attractive opportunity to acquire this knowledge and qualifications alongside their Law studies.

The English-language certificate programme is structured in two stages and leads to the certificates »International Legal Studies« and »AdvancedInternational Legal Studies«. The training focus can be placed either on English Common Law or on International and European Law. Combinations of these subjects are also permitted, depending on your own interests. At each training level, five course|classes, each comprising two semester hours per week, must be successfully completed in order to obtain the certificate. This means that the programme comprises a total of (at least) 20 semester hours per week.

Participation in the certificate programmes requires prior registration at the Examinations Office of the Faculty of Law.

The requirement for this is enrolment in the Law degree programme with a First Examination or in one of the other degree programmes at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Participation is possible from the first semester of the respective degree programme.

Participants should have language skills at level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in the foreign language in which the course|classes of the respective certificate programme are taught.
