General situation

All over Germany, entering public places is prohibited. See the detailled regulations of the City of Jena valid until 19 April 2020.

International Students

  • The University of Jena is operating in emergency mode. All events, teaching, and examinations have been cancelled for the time being. The library, all canteens, computer rooms, and all university buildings are closed except for emergency staff.
  • The lecture period does probably not begin until May 4, 2020.
  • The university cannot guarantee that you will receive adequate care or attention in case of quarantine.
  • All over Germany, entering public places is prohibited. See the detailled regulations of the City of Jena valid until 19 April 2020.
Entering Germany/Travelling from other areas in Germany Show content
  • The EU prohibits entry to non-EU citizens from 18 March until 19 April 2020. Learn more...
  • List of risk areas defined by the Robert Koch Institute and the City of Jena (please check daily)
  • Persons entering Jena from other countries or affected federal states of Germany must
    • register immediately at the health office of your place of residence (Jena: 03641-49 2222 or corona@jena.de)
    • stay in quarantine in the apartment for 14 days (this also applies to your flatmates). Non-observance will be fined severely.
    • inform us: incoming@uni-jena.de.
  • In case of showing Covid-19 symptoms: email corona@uni-jena.de or call the fever telephone of the city of Jena: +49 03641 493333 and inform us: incoming@uni-jena.de.
  • Please report to your landlord, e.g. the Studierendenwerk housing administration, when you return/enter from a risk area (see above), if you have to go into quarantine, or are ill.
  • From 22 March 2020, entering public places in Jena is prohibited. See the regulations of the City of Jena. Follow the instructions strictly.
Guest studies: no enrolment of new students in summer semester 2020 Show content
  • We will not enrol any new guest students for the summer semester 2020. We are very sorry but we do this in the interest of your own safety.
  • Please reapply for the winter semester 2020/21 (after nomination by your home university). We hope to see you in Jena next winter semester.
  • Guest students who return to Jena after the semester break:
    • see the information on entering Germany/Jena
    • we advise you to discuss this with your home university
    • we try to offer a regular study programme, but cannot guarantee that this will be accredited at home (courses offered, number of required credits). See our updated information about guest studies (courses and credits).
  • Guest students who wish to extend their stay should communicate this to their home university and us: incoming@uni-jena.de.
  • Guest students who want to terminate their stay prematurely should immediately inform their home university, the dormitory and us: incoming@uni-jena.de.  Please send us your application for de-registration PDF [pdf 149KB]/WORD [doc 140KB] and for the re-payment [pdf 158KB] of the summer semester contribution.
Enrolment of new international students Show content
  • Please note our daily updated information at https://www.uni-jena.de/Studienstart+international.htmlde 
  • Enrolment is not made in person. Send your documents by post or email instead, from now on by 15.5.2020 at the latest.
    • Only after entry into Germany until 14.5.2020 (preferably before the lecture period starts, see above).
    • Please note all the information in the Enrolment Guide.
    • We need your German postal address (form).
    • The semester fee must be transferred from a German bank account. We need a bank statement/remittance slip (no order!)
    • Non-EU citizens: Please also send us a scan/photo of your entry stamp in your passport.
    • If you have any questions, please write to incoming@uni-jena.de  or come to the office hours of the International Office.
    • The University makes every effort to ensure that the first semester of studies can be studied. If you have any questions regarding your studies, please contact your student advisory service.
  • If you have applied for a student dormitory, please inform the accommodation office about your date of arrival.
Non-arrival/cancellation Show content

If you are unable to arrive and enroll by May 15, 2020 or if you do not want to begin your studies in Jena in the summer semester 2020, please let us know (incoming@uni-jena.de) and please reapply for the winter semester. We hope to see you in Jena next winter semester.

DSH exam on 23 - 27 March cancelled Show content
  • The DSH exam 23 - 27 March 2020 is cancelled, because the university has forbidden all exams further notice. It follows the city of Jena regulations to avoid groups of people meeting.
  • You may apply for the re-payment [pdf 158KB] of the exam fee. Please send the filled-in form to incoming@uni-jena.de.
  • If you cannot present another language certificate equivalent to the DSH-2, you may enrol for the summer semester 2020 from now on until 15 May 2020 with your conditional admission to the programme. You have to show a DSH-2 certificate by 30 September 2020 to be re-registered for the winter semester. If this is unsuitable for you, please reapply for the winter semester and inform us now: incoming@uni-jena.de  
Entrance test for the DSH course on 31 March 2020 cancelled Show content
  • The Entrance test on 31 March 2020 for new participants is cancelled, because the City of Jena has forbidden all organized events and people meeting in public spaces until 19 April 2020.
  • Please reapply for the winter semester.
  • If you have already transferred the course fees (1st and/or 2nd instalment) to the course organiser JenDaF e.V., please ask JenDaF e.V. (Ms. Bettermann: jendaf@uni-jena.de) to refund the fees or to transfer the fees to the next winter semester if you are applying for a new course. We hope to see you in Jena next winter semester.
DSH course (re-registration of existing participants) Show content

Welcome Days (30 March - 30 April 2020) Show content
  • The Welcome Days do not take place. The Market of International Opportunities (15 April 2020) is cancelled.
  • The InfoCafé in the International Centre (30. March - 9 April)  is cancelled.
Immigration office/extension of residence permit Show content

After enrollment/if required, we will send you a certificate of enrollment, which you can use to apply for a residence permit for study purposes at the Immigration Office in your place of residence.

However, the Jena city administration (and Immigration Office) is closed until 19.4.2020.

You can apply for the extension of your residence title [pdf 254KB] (fill it out, print it out, sign it, scan it) together with

  • certificate of study
  • proof of financing (bank statement/scholarship certificate/parent's declaration)
  • rental agreement
  • proof of health insurance, and
  • copy of passport

by e-mail to auslaenderbehoerde@jena.de.

If you book your appointment at the Immigration Office in Jena for May/June now, your current residence permit will be extended for a short time (so-called "fiction"; see appointment confirmation e-mail).

This "fiction" does NOT entitle you to re-entry if you leave Germany in the meantime. See the information below.

If you do not live in Jena, please inform yourself about the regulations in your place of residence.

Re-entering Germany after the semester break Show content

If you have left Jena/Germany during the semester break, please note the information on re-entering Germany/Jena above.

If your current visa/residence permit expires before you enter Germany again, you must apply for a new entry visa at the German Embassy in your current country of residence. You will need a re-entry certificate from the university. Please contact the Student Service Centre or the International Office as soon as possible. However, the certificate will only be issued if your re-registration for the summer semester 2020 has been completed by having

  • payed the semester fee for the summer semester 2020 and
  • a valid health insurance for the whole semester and
  • no other re-registration blocks (failed exams, documents to be submitted, etc.).

We advise you to keep your German local Immigration Office informed about your situation.

Support by mentors/Help in case of quarantine Show content
  • Our mentors are unpaid volunteers.
  • We cannot oblige them to provide support.
  • Active mentors are asked to provide contactless support (email, telephone, chat, messenger programs).
  • In the event of a mentee's quarantine, they could be dependent on someobody to do their shopping. Mentors and mentees should let us know: incoming@uni-jena.de.
