An application for an exchange place is independent of the application for a scholarship.

Africa und Asia

  • Application deadline

    15th January for a stay abroad in the following academic year

  • Necessary application documents
    • Application form
    • Motivation letter
    • Letter of recommendation from a university lecturer
    • Transcript of records (with grades) (Friedolin)
    • for Master: certificate of Bachelor's degree
    • CV (chronological)
    • Proof of language proficiency (working language and/ or national language)
  • Application procedure

    The application process is divided into two parts: first, you apply for a spot in the exchange programme at the Friedrich Schiller University, and if successful, in a second step, you send an application to your desired host university.

    1st Step:

    • Submission of application documents to the International Office by 15th January
    • Specification of a max. of 3 desired host universities sorted by priority
    • Decision on the allocation of places is based on your application documents
    • Written notification of the result of the selection process approx. 4 weeks after the application date.

    2nd Step: (after successfully applying at the Friedrich Schiller University)

    • Official acceptance of your spot in the programme by completing the declaration of acceptance
    • Start of the application process at the foreign host university
    • Fill in and send off university-specific application documents from the host university

    The final decision on admission lies with the host university.

North America

  • Application deadline

    30th November for the winter semester and summer semester of the following academic year: this only applies to the places that are allocated in the International Office, in other words: those places that are open to all subjects.

    Please contact the programme coordinators directly about the application date for the USA programmes in your department (see list of contact persons).

  • Necessary application documents
    • Application form
    • Motivation letter in English
    • Letter of recommendation from a university lecturer
    • Transcript of records (with grades) (Friedolin)
    • for Master: certificate of Bachelor's degree
    • CV (chronological) in English
    • Proof of language proficiency (working language and/ or national language)
  • Application procedure

    1st Step:

    • Submit the application documents to the International Office or the responsible coordinator by 30th November (see contact person)
    • Specify a desired host university or list of several universities according to priority

    2nd Step:

    • Written invitation to a selection interview (approx. 15 minutes), usually in English (usually in January)
    • Allocation of places is based on your application documents and the interview by the selection committee
      • The selection is made with regard to your preferred partner university, but your second and third choice will be taken into account if the study places at your desired university are no longer available.
      • It is expected that you are well informed about all universities of your choice.
      • In exceptional cases, the selection committee reserves the right to suggest another place of study.
    • Written notification of the result of the selection process approx. 2 weeks after the interview

    3rd Step: (after successfully applying at Friedrich Schiller University)

    • Fill in and send off university-specific application documents from the host university
    • Proof of financial situation (so-called bank statement) and vaccination certificates are often required

    The final decision on admission lies with the host university.

    The final confirmation from the host university as well as the necessary documents required for your application for a visa for exchange participants at the American/ Canadian embassy often does not arrive before June.

  • TASSEP - Application deadline

    15th January for stays abroad starting in the following winter semester (starting in August)

  • TASSEP - Application procedure

    The application documents must be submitted to the International Office by 15th January. Either only one desired host university or a list of several universities ranked according to priority can be specified.

    The applications are examined and given to the TASSEP coordinators of the respective departments. All applicants will be ranked. This ranking will then be forwarded to the central registry of the TASSEP programme via the International Office. They try to consider as many applications as possible.

Latin America

    Students of the humanities and social sciences, law and natural sciences can only apply if they have been enrolled for at least 3 semesters.

    The following documents are required for your application for a study place:

    • for Master: certificate of Bachelor's degree

    • Proof of language proficiency (working language and/ or national language)

    You can apply for the above mentioned universities in one step for an exchange place, a scholarship in the amount of 650 to 750 euros per month and a one-time travel allowance. You can find more information about the scholarship here.
