German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv)

(since 2012)

The German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig was founded in 2012 as a research center of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The center is established as an institution in Leipzig and is jointly run by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, and the University of Leipzig - and in cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). The science consortium is enhanced by the expertise of several non-university research facilities, e. g., the Max Planck Institutes for Biogeochemistry or Chemical Ecology, respectively, in Jena. iDiv's mission is to record biological diversity in its complexity, verify the accelerating biodiversity crisis and decipher its causes and relationships, which is reflected by the four key research areas of iDiv:

(1) "biodiversity patterns" (quantification and understanding of spatio-temporal changes of biodiversity),
(2) "biodiversity processes" (evolutionary and ecological processes which generate and maintain biodiversity),

(3) "biodiversity functions" (how biodiversity influences ecosystem functions and offers ecosystem services to humanity), and

(4) "biodiversity and society" (How can biodiversity be safeguarded and integrated into the sustainable management of our planet?).

The team of iDiv researchers consists of eight research groups hosted at the center in Leipzig and of the iDiv members and their groups, more than 100 scientists at Halle, Jena, Leipzig and other locations. iDiv started its second funding period in October 2016.
