The laudable work of Zeiss, Abbe and Schott is globally recognised as a prime example of innovative symbiotic collaboration, consisting of excellent basic and applied research as well as successful, internationally oriented entrepreneurship.
Under this umbrella, the aim of the profile line is to foster the scientific strength of the Optics and Photonics sector and to integrate research on Innovative Materials and Technologies and Energy Research as further research topics. Within the scope of this scientific background, creating sustainable interdisciplinary links with the fields of biology and medicine have been encouraging fruitful cooperations within the University motto Light - Life - Liberty.
Optics and Photonics research at the University concentrates on three research fields: ultra optics (nanooptics, laser physics, photonic materials and optical systems), strong field physics (high-intensity lasers, laser physics and X-ray optics) and biophotonics (spectral-optical analytics, biomedical imaging, chip-based analytics and diagnostics).
The field of Innovative Materials and Energy Storage focuses on areas such as synthetic macro-molecules, polysaccharides, nano-structured sensors and nano-materials as well as the production of synthetic "minimal cells" or aspects of modern methods and processes in glass and polymer chemistry.
