The ongoing demographic change represents one of the biggest challenges of our time. The positive trend of a continually increasing life expectancy has one downside: more people tend to suffer from age-associated dysfunctions and disease. Moreover, the population’s rising median age confronts social services with the challenge of ensuring long-term financial sustainability, families with the challenge of caring for relatives and the job market with the challenge of providing qualified employment provisions. A solution for these societal problems can be found in the improvement of older people’s health as well as in the requirements for self-determined lifestyle in old age.
The center brings representatives from different disciplines together and offers a platform for the realization of joint interdisciplinary research projects on a local and supra-regional level.
The goal of the Aging Research Center Jena (ARC) is the advancement of interdisciplinary research and training in the area of aging research with points of contact between life sciences (medicine, pharmacy, biology, nutritional sciences) social and behavioral sciences, the humanities as well as mathematics and computer sciences.
