Ethics Center
The Ethics Center at Friedrich-Schiller University (FSU-Jena) was founded November 2002 as an inter-disciplinary academic center of excellence, working on applied-ethics issues of bioethics, medicine, business, and inter-group conflict.
Prof. Dr. mult. Nikolaus Knoepffler holds the Chair of Applied Ethics at the FSU-Jena and presides as chair of the Ethics Center governing board. This board includes members from the faculties of medicine, biology, philosophy, and theology. Additionally, the center is supported by two advisory boards representing, respectively, scientific and social/economic matters.
The Ethics Center promotes and coordinates interdisciplinary research, teaching, and consulting on applied-ethics topics. Its members do grant-supported research, teach in the university’s Applied Ethics and Conflict Management Masters Program, and advise doctoral students doing advanced work in applied ethics. The center supports advancing and communicating ethical research to a wide public through both academic and popular publications. And the center organizes and sponsors lectures and conferences.
The Global Applied Ethics Institute (GAEI), an affiliated organization, is an international think tank directed by Knoepffler with a network of scientists from the US, Great Britain, China, India, and other countries.
