The Jena Centre for Bioinformatics (JCB) is a network of about 30 research groups, mainly located in Jena. The groups belong to five faculties at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, the Hans Knöll Institute, Fritz Lipmann Institute, Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena, Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology and the BioControl company. Moreover, the JCB has some external members.

The main aim of the centre is to strengthen and co-ordinate interdisciplinary research involving bioinformatics and Theoretical Systems Biology and to foster cooperation between bioinformatics groups and wet-lab groups. This has led to numerous high-ranking publications.

The JCB was funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research from 2001-2007. Thereafter, it has been sponsored from various sources such as the FSU, HKI, publishing houses, revenues from conferences etc.

JCB’s activities include:

  • organizing seminars with invited external and internal speakers
  • maintaining a websiteExternal link and a mailing list
  • bringing in contact groups with complementary expertise and supporting the exchange about tools, software and methods
  • organizing Bioinformatics workshops and meetings.

The meetings have been enlarged over the years by including participants from Leipzig, Halle and other nearby sites. This has led to the annual series of Central German Meeting on Bioinformatics (CGMB).
