The Jena Center for Microbial Communication (JCMC) has been launched to achieve both focusing and perpetuating the established research structures in Microbial Communication in Jena. It is meant to create a multidisciplinary network promoting transfer between basic research and applied sciences stretching far beyond the borders of Thuringia.

The scientific aim of the center is a better understanding of chemical signals, their spatial expansion, perception and the decoding of all subordinated development processes. This is only possible through the integration of Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, Geology, Optics/Physics and Systems Biology. In the long-term the modelling of homo- and heterogenous consortia will result from this integration.
