InfectoGnostics: Breaking new ground in infection diagnostics
InfectoGnostics – Research campus for the diagnosis of infectious diseases and infection research
The InfectoGnostics research campus is a public-private partnership developing new methods in infection diagnostics. In a triad of technology, application and production, more than 30 partners from science, medicine and industry are developing marketable solutions for rapid and cost-effective on-site analysis (point-of-care testing) of infections – such as pneumonia (e.g. caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens) and tuberculosis in human medicine, animal diseases, and pathogen detection in food. Within the joint project "Pneumonia in Immunosuppression" seven public and private partners aim at developing a reliable, rapid and non-invasive diagnostic tool for pneumonia pathogens and their resistance. (Project video below only available in German).
The foundingpartners are beside Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena and the Universitätsklinikum, the Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena, the Leibniz-Institut für Photonische Technologien (Leibniz-IPHT), the Leibniz-Institut für Naturstoff-Forschung und Infektionsbiologie – Hans-Knöll-Institut (Leibniz-HKI) and companies for medical diagnostics and analytical techniques Analytik Jena AG and Alere Technologies GmbH.
Public-private Partnership for Innovation
The InfectoGnostics research campus is one of nine winners of the funding initiative "Research campus - Public-private Partnership for Innovation" External link of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). This initiative is a new tool in the Federal Government’s "Hightech Strategy". You can find more information about this on the website of the accompanying research programme "Forschungscampus pro aktiv" External link (only available in German). After a positive evaluation by the jury, InfectoGnostics has entered the first five-year main phase in February 2015.
With the help of this public-private partnership, a European centre for infection diagnostics will be established that will be characterised by excellent research and training and the interaction of basic research, application and technology transfer.
