Hotspot in Biodiversity Science

iDiv is a DFG research centre and a joint central facility of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Leipzig University and is operated in cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ. Of the more than 250 personnel and more than 100 iDiv members, many are employed through the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

At iDiv, researchers from 30 nations establish the scientific basis for the sustainable management of our planet’s biodiversity. Biodiversity refers to the diversity of life – not only species diversity but also genetic diversity, diversity of functions, interactions and ecosystems. We know that our actions dramatically change this diversity: species become extinct, genetic information and entire ecosystems are lost. At the same time, we know little about the extent of these changes, the underlying processes and consequences for humanity.

In the face of this urgent problem, the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) decided to set up a research centre specifically tasked with investigating biodiversity. The result was iDiv, which was founded in 2012 by a consortium of eleven scientific institutions including the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
