The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute - (HKI) is an internationally leading centre for the research of new natural products of microbial origin and for the infection biology of pathogenic fungi. The researchers at the HKI use state-of-the-art laboratory methods and a fully equipped Bio Pilot Plant to investigate the biosynthesis and function of microbial natural products as mediators of biological communication. Based on this knowledge, they develop possibilities to use such substances for the benefit of mankind. The focus here is on new active substances to combat infectious diseases and overcome resistance. In order to develop new anti-infective strategies, HKI scientists are studying the molecular mechanisms of infection and human immune defence. They focus on pathogenic fungi, for which there are currently insufficient diagnostic and therapeutic methods available. Numerous research disciplines are working together on the development of a systems biology of infection based on omics technologies and bioinformatic data analysis and modelling. It involves all participants in the infection process, from the molecular to the multi-organismic level. In this way, it provides a comprehensive picture of the complex course of infection and the possibilities of human influence. The HKI is an important driving force in the network of research institutions in Jena. The institute maintains particularly close ties with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and is strongly committed to the qualification of young scientists.
