Photonics for Life – from Ideas to Instruments

The IPHT’s work is characterized by fundamental research in photonics and biophotonics, the intensive dialogue with users and the translation of the research results into application-specific systems. At the interface of its three core research topics Biophotonics, Fiber Optics and Photonic Detection, the institute generates innovative solutions and applications for urging challenges in medicine, health care, environment and nature protection and security – according to the IPHT motto Photonics for Life.

The technical realization of user-specific systems is based on intensive research in Micro-/Nanotechnology, Fiber Technology and Systems Technology combined with an excellent infrastructure such as cleanroom facilities and one of the most modern fiber drawing towers in Europe as well as an outstanding technical equipment. This infrastructure is a unique feature of IPHT and an indispensable requirement to implement the whole process chain in the institute: from fundamental research on optical technologies to their translation into tailor-made system solutions for various areas of life. From Ideas to Instruments.
