Research Centre “Laboratory of the Enlightenment“

The intention of the "Laboratory of the Enlightenment" is to study the rise of modernity during the long 18th century.

The “Laboratory of the Enlightenment” is an interdisciplinary research network located at Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. Its intention is to study the rise of modernity during the long 18th century (circa 1690 to 1830) and to correlate this with contemporary developments in state, society, religion and science, but also in the arts and humanities. The research focus is to compare, primarily on the structural and discursive levels, social formations in the long 18th century with those in the opening decade of the 21st century, both of which have been seen as hybrid, transformative and open. The aim is twofold: to gain new insights into the 18th century and to enunciate a specific understanding of the present.
