Programme summary

Aim of the masters programme in Medical Photonics is to prepare students for scientific and research-oriented careers within the field of Medical Optics and Photonics and to provide the foundation for further academic programmes. As a student of this masters programme you will gain deeper theoretical, methodical and systematic insights into branches of biology, medicine, mathematics, chemistry and physics. At the same time, you will gather the necessary experimental skills for doing research in the field of Medical Photonics. During your studies, you will have the possibility to receive specialised training in various subfields of Medical Photonics, such as microscopy, spectroscopy and diagnostics as well as clinical applications of these techniques.

Special features

Adjustment modules offered at the beginning of the master programme aim at complementing your knowledge in the neighbouring disciplines. Modules in this block impart knowledge in human biology, mathematics, physics and chemistry. Additional modules will give you training in basic skills such as programming, statistics and image processing, which is fundamental to all other modules. Moreover, elective courses in the 2nd and 3rd semester will allow you to focus in more depth on special topics of Medical Photonics. Exercises and practical training in student and research laboratories complement all courses. The faculties of medicine, physics and astronomy, chemistry and earth sciences and extramural research institutes organise all theoretical and practical modules jointly. All courses and examinations will be held in English.

Career opportunities

The MSc Medical Photonics programme will provide you with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to work in the interdisciplinary field of Medical Photonics. The program will facilitate you to use and develop optical methods in biomedical research and in clinical practice. Graduates of the MSc Medical Photonics will have excellent prospects in finding a job at technology-related companies in optics, medical technology or life sciences. These branches will experience a severe lack in skilled specialists in the near future. Alternatively, graduates can pursue a scientific career and participate in one of the PhD programmes of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. Medical doctors can use the master programme to gain insight into optical and photonic techniques and to qualify for MD / PhD programmes of the Medical Faculty.
