With the project "Natural sciences in industry and society: contact, mentoring, communication and cooperation", the Joachim Herz Foundation supports the expansion of the programme to support young researchers at the Graduate Academy.

The project aims at strengthening the transfer paths between academic natural sciences on one side and industry and society on the other side:

  • the transfer through individual career development after the doctoral and postdoc phase,
  • the transfer through science communication in the context of a "third mission" and
  • the transfer through joint research in the framework of doctoral research projects in cooperation with companies and associations.

The project has four subprojects: contact, mentoring, communication, cooperation.

Insights in the subprojects

Career Day Expand entry

Doctoral candidates and postdocs will, at some point, face the question of how to shape their career after the doctoral and in the postdoctoral phase. For career paths outside academia, there is often a lack of ideas and role models. Yet there are plenty of possibilities! This gap is to be closed by the event Career Day. During the event, doctoral candidates will have the chance to participate in workshops on career orientation and career development, talk to alumni who work in fields outside academia and meet company representatives.

Career Mentoring Expand entry

The programme "Career Mentoring for STEM doctoral candidates" aims to offer doctoral candidates individual mentoring by experienced professionals from various fields in industry, non-profit organizations and the public sector. These mentors have successfully transitioned out of academia after the doctorate and share their experience and knowledge about structures, strategies and processes in their area of expertise. Career Mentoring aims at supporting doctoral candidates in the natural sciences preparing for a career in industry and society, providing them with better access to career-relevant networks, and developing and expanding their competence profile for the non-academic job market.

Information for mentors

Science communication Expand entry

In the subproject “Science Communication”, young scientists are going to be trained in addressing a broader public with their research as part of a "third mission" by realisation of short film projects.

Further information will follow in the summer semester 2022.

Joint research PhD projects with partners from industry Expand entry

Within the framework of this project, legally binding standards will be developed, in order to ensure an adequate collaboration between industry and academia; these are going to be implemented within pilot projects.

Further information will follow in the summer semester 2022.

The project is funded by the Joachim Herz Foundation for a period of 5 years (2019 - 2023).
