                          - At the event "Welcome
to the doctorate" on 18 October, the
Graduate Academy informs all new doctoral candidates
about what the University Jena offers for them. They
will also have the possibility to swap ideas on
different themes of the doctorate over coffee and
cake. Following this, they can join a pub crawl
organised by the DR.FSU. The first pub will be the
                            Immergrün at 7pm.

                          - From 08 to 10 November, the Career Days for
doctoral researchers and postdocs will take
place at the University of Jena. There you will get
an insight into career paths in science and learn
about strategies for finding a job in business and
society. Soon you will find more information on this

                          - From 11 to 13 October, the Born
Global Startup Festival will take place
in Halle as well as online. The festival offers an
interesting and varied programme on the
internationalisation of start-ups. It is organised
in cooperation with the universities of Halle and
                            Leipzig.

Jena)! The Science Battle is an event that shows in
a playful way how scientists tackle a new research
question. The University of Jena won against the
                            universities of Coimbra (Portugal), Salamanca
(Spain) and Iași (Romania). You can find the
                            broadcast of the event here.
The competition is held within the framework of the
                            "European City
Universities Alliance". As the winner, Jena
will compete in next year's ScienceBattle final
against the University of Pavia, the winner in 2021.

                          - In the video series "Is it true?"
scientists from the University of Jena show how much
truth there is in well-known popular scientific
                            myths. The first
episode is on the myth that we only really use
a fraction of our brain power. The second
episode sheds light on the question of whether
and how trees can talk to each other. If you would
also like to debunk popular science myths, you can

                          - In June, the new
doctoral council of University of Jena,
                            known as DR.FSU, was
elected. The council represents the interests
of all doctoral researchers at University of Jena.
The constituent meeting of the new council
will take place on 06 October at 18.00h in the
Auditorium (Johannisstr. 13). All interested parties
                            are cordially invited.

                          - Corona had replaced scientific conferences and
trips with online meetings in the last two years.
Now both are possible again. At the same time,
                            however, it is becoming increasingly
clear that the CO2 emissions associated with
scientific trips are significant. The Junge Akademie
and the BBAW have therefore now presented "Recommendations
for environmentally friendly travel behaviour in
                                academia" (only in German).
Short-distance flights, for example, should only be
allowed in exceptional cases, and train travel (even
in first class) should be the means of transport of
                            choice. (Photo: Adobe Stock/malp)

                          - From
2026 on, all publications in the USA that
have been financed by public funds are to be freely
accessible. According to the New York
Times, this will affect at least 400 scientific
institutions. This could also stimulate European
Open Access efforts: In Germany, according to the coalition
agreement, Open Access should become the
common standard. However, a draft of the law is
                            still pending.

                          - The German government wants to cut its budget
                              for international academic exchange: For
example, up to 700 long-term fellowships are to be
lost at the German Academic Exchange Service and
more than 100 research fellowships at the Humboldt
Foundation. The Philipp Schwartz Initiative to
support refugee researchers will also be cut. In a german
                              open letter, researchers express their
disapproval of these cuts. In November, the draft
budget will be discussed in the Bundestag.

                          - The
war in Ukraine also has an impact on the research
orientation of universities. In the last 20 years, many
                              universities have adopted so-called civil
clauses in their constitution. These state
that the university's research should only be used
for civilian purposes if possible. The German
Academy of Science and Engineering now
wants to open a discussion on military
research at universities and put civil clauses to
the test with a strategy paper.

                        News
                          from University of Jena

                          - The
University of Jena is facing substantial additional
costs due to the sharp rise in energy prices. The
university has therefore taken measures to
reduce energy costs: these include lowering
room temperatures to 19 degrees, not heating
corridors and stairwells, switching off hot water in
toilets, and switching off outdoor lighting at
night. All measures can be found here
(only in German). However, a digital semester is out
of the question – after the experiences with Corona.
                            Nevertheless, some universities are discussing
                            or have already decided
on an extension of the Christmas break.

                          - The University has a new Vice President since
summer: chemist Prof. Dr. Christoph Steinbeck
                            becomes "Vice
                                President for Digitalisation". In this
position, he will head the University Computer
Centre and play a decisive role in the University's
                            major digital projects.

                          - Since June, the ThULB Jena offers a bibliography
of publications at the University of Jena. All
publications (print and digital) by its members are
recorded and presented. If you would like to support
the development of the bibliography, you can report
                            your own publications here.

                          - The
University of Jena's historic Karzer is
being restored. "Karzer" was the name given to the university's
prison cells. Until 1908, there were a total
of nine karzer cells at the University of Jena, but
only one of them has survived. This one is unique in
Germany, as it was painted entirely by one student
(Photo: Jena University Photo Centre). Regarding the
painting, there was a Jena myth that it had been
painted with excrement and blood. During the
                            restoration, this was clearly
                              debunked.

the experiences of the last 30 years. Besides Jena,
other applicants include Frankfurt/Oder and Leipzig
together with Plauen. The final decision on the

                          - On 25 November, "Long
Night of the Sciences" will take place
again for the first time. This years' focus is on
the research landscape at the Beutenberg Campus –
but there will also be many events in the city
centre. Tickets are available at the Jena tourist

                          - All the
major cities in Germany have their own crime scene
detectives. Until now, Jena has been denied this
pleasure. But now the Second German Television has
had mercy: the Saturday crime series about
                            forensic scientist Theresa
Wolff is set in Jena. Filming has been and
will be done at various locations at the university.
Two episodes have already been released, the third
episode will be broadcast in autumn.
