Friedrich Schiller University Jena supports doctoral candidates financially who have fled Ukraine due to war to begin or continue their academic qualification at Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

The programme is funded within the framework of the DAAD programme "Future Ukraine - Scholarship programme for refugees from Ukraine at German universities"External link.

Who can apply?

Researchers who have the goal to do a PhD in Germany and/or Ukraine can apply for the Fellowship. The following groups of people can apply:

  • Ukrainian citizens who had their centre of life in Ukraine until 24 February 2022 and/or who have been in Germany as exchange students since the winter semester 2021/22 but were unable to return due to the war
  • Third-country nationals or stateless persons who enjoy international protection in Ukraine, provided they resided in Ukraine before or on 24 February 2022
  • Third-country nationals who resided in Ukraine with a permanent residence title before or on 24 February 2022 and who cannot return safely to their country of origin

Additionally, applicants need a doctoral supervisor who belongs to one of the faculties of the University of Jena.

Funding

  • Scholarship in the amount of 1300,- € per month
  • Participation in German language courses up to 200,- € per year
  • Maximum funding period until 28.02.2025 or upon departure from Germany

If the scholarship holder returns to his/her home country and continues the doctorate at a university in Ukraine, the scholarship can be converted into a sur-place scholarship. The monthly funding amount is then reduced to 450,-€ per month.

How do I apply?

The following documents are required for the application:

  • Curriculum vitae in table form
  • exposé of the dissertation project with work and time schedule
  • copy of the university degree certificate with overview of grades
  •  declaration of the person who will supervise the doctoral project at the University of Jena
