photo competition: Doctoral hat by Thomas Siefke
                          chosen as most beautiful hat!
                        The vote for the photo
competition "Hats off!" 2020 is closed and the winning
hats have been chosen! With a great participation of
more than 300 votes, the hat of Thomas Siefke from the
Institute of Applied Physics was chosen as the most
beautiful, inspiring and creative doctoral hat. The
base of the hat is a knight’s helmet onto which a
medieval castle has been mounted. By turning a crank,
a knight can be moved on his daily quest within the
                          castle.
                        The hat of Martin Klapper
has made second place, while the third place goes to
the hat of Felix Weidinger. The team of Graduate
Academy would like to thank all for their active
participation in this first virtual photo competition!

                        Academic
employment law: Corona-related extension of maximum
                          employment period
                        Due to the corona
                          pandemic, the academic employment law
                          (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz) has been
supplemented by a temporary regulation: The maximum
employment period (usually 6 years until the doctorate
and 12 years in total) can be extended by 6 months.
This only applies to employment contracts for
qualification purposes that are in place between 1
March 2020 and 30 September 2020 and in which the
scientific work has been restricted by the pandemic.
If you are close to the
end of your maximum employment period, please speak to
your supervisor. It is the responsibility of your
supervisor to assess whether there is a
pandemic-related delay and whether it is possible to
extend the contract. Unfortunately, the university
cannot provide additional funds for extensions.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has been
offering a new programme to support research stays
abroad during the doctorate: The stays abroad can last
between one and twelve months and the funding can be
splitted and be used for research stays in different
countries. For example, a research stay of six months
in the USA and two additional short stays in China to
conduct laboratory experiments can be funded by this
scheme. International doctoral candidates can apply
for the scheme – if they do not receive PhD funding of
the DAAD. The application deadline for the first call
                          is 31 August 2020.
