Ceremonial Matriculation

The University of Jena welcomes its new students in the winter semester 2022/23 with a ceremony in the Volkshaus Jena.

The Ceremonial Matriculation for the winter semester 2022/23 will take place on 28 October 2022 at 2 pm in the Volkshaus of the city of Jena.
To ensure that everyone can participate in the event, the "Dies Academicus" is traditionally called in the afternoon. Thus, there will be no lecutres on 28 October from 1 to 4 pm.

Live broadcast

The large plenary hall of the Volkshaus, named after the physicist and social reformer Ernst Abbe, provides about 800 seats.

All available tickets for Volkshaus for this purpose are already assigned.

Please note that admission to the Volkshaus is only possible with a ticket. Admission is from 1 pm.

The Ceremonial Matriculation will be live streamed via this website as well as in Lecture Hall 1, Carl-Zeiß-Str. 3. Tickets are not required for access to Lecture Hall 1.

Moderation and programme

Lea Deubner, graduate of the University of Jena, will moderate the ceremonial matriculation.

The following programme points await you:

  • Entrance of the Senate and the Executive Board with musical prelude by the members of the Academic Orchestra Association conducted by Sebastian Krahnert
  • Welcome by Prof. Dr Walter Rosenthal, President of the University of Jena
  • Ceremonial lecture by Prof. Dr Irina Scherbakowa
  • Music by the PsychoChoir
  • Ceremonial matriculation by awarding citizenship certificates to one new student from each of our ten faculties
  • Round of talks with the president of the University of Jena, representatives of the Student Council (StuRa) and the city
  • Awarding of the examination prizes and the DAAD prize

Keynote speaker

Prof. Dr Irina Scherbakowa will be the keynote speaker welcoming the new students of the winter semester 2022/23.

Prof. Scherbakowa is a Russian historian, publicist and translator and currently teaches at the University of Jena.

She is also co-founder of the human rights organization "Memorial", which received the Nobel Peace Prize this year.

DAAD Award Winner

For her commitment to refugees from Ukraine and her very good academic achievements, this year the Jena student Andriiana Raikova will be honored with the Award for Outstanding Achievement by International Students at German Universities of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)External link.

The award ceremony will take place during the ceremonial matriculation.

Traditional tree planting

After the Ceremonial Matriculation (around 3:30 pm), you can join the President and other representatives of the University to walk to your tree, which is traditionally planted for each new cohort. The tree planting will take place around 4 pm at Planetarium 1External link.
