                          - The E-learning
Day of the University of Jena will take
place on 05 June. This year, the focus will be on
how teaching in presence has changed as a result of
the many new digital opportunities. The day will be
followed by an e-learning week to try out the newly
acquired knowledge. For example, there will be
workshops on digital tools or on didactic
qualification, lectures, MMZ studio tours, live
experiments and much more. Unfortunately, all events
                            will be in German.

                          - The Intudoc tutors are organising a weekend
seminar in the Thuringian Forest. The
idea is to discuss the question "What is science?"
from an interdisciplinary perspective. During the
weekend, there will be also time for hikes through
the Thuringian Forest. The seminar will take place
in German. Costs for travel (from Saalfeld), two
nights' accommodation and meals are included in the
course fee (30 euros). (Photo above:

                          - The Doctoral Council invites you to two
events: On 02 June there is the regulars' table
at 20.00 h in the "OFF" bar (Weigelstraße 7). On 24
June there will be a short hike (approx. 8
kilometres). Meeting point is at 13.00 h at the
                            "Lobeda" tram stop.

                          - On 20 and 21 June, the Thuringian
Research Data Management Days will take
place for the fifth time. There will be online
workshops on the general benefits of research data
management, on specialized information services, on
copyright and personal rights in research data, and
on support tools for data protection.

                          - On 18 October, another Science Battle will
take place. Interdisciplinary teams compete to find
the cleverest and most entertaining answer to
questions from the audience. The Jena team had
won the Science Battle against three other
universities in 2022 (Photo above: FSU/Jens Meyer).
Therefore, this year the University of Jena is
competing against the winner from 2021, the
University of Pavia (ITA). The Science Battle is
                            organised by the EC2U
alliance and will take place in Poitiers (FR).
Researchers are currently still being sought for the
Jena team. Proposals can be submitted until 30 June
                            (ec2u@uni-jena.de).

                          - On 16 and 17 June, a nationwide
meeting of the "Network for Decent
Labour in Academia" will take place in Berlin. In
the days leading up to it (12 to 16 June), the
                            network will organise a nationwide
action week. Within this context, a discussion
(in German) on the financing of Thuringian
universities will take place in Jena on 14 June
                            (17.00 h in seminar room 309, Carl-Zeiss-Straße 3).

searches for your very personal view on
diversity at our university. A jury will select the
best three pictures for an award (200€; 100€; 50€).
Each photograph submitted will be showcased in an
exhibition at the beginning of the winter semester
2023/24. The closing date for submission is 31
                            August 2023.

                          - The interdisciplinary Rowena
                                Morse Mentoring programme supports
female doctoral candidates (in the final phase of

                          - In 2022, the number of articles published by chinese
scientists in 82 highly cited scientific
journals was higher than that of the USA for
the first time. This was the result of an analysis
                            of the so-called Nature
Index. Since the index was introduced in
2014, China has now overtaken the USA in most
scientific disciplines (the last exception being
life sciences). In third place for the most
                            citations, by the way, is
Germany, albeit by a considerable margin. Only
in publications in the two journals "Nature" and
"Science" does the USA continue to have a
significantly higher share than China. (Illustration

                          - The entire editorial board of the journal
                            NeuroImage has
resigned. This was triggered by the fact
that the publisher Elsevier had raised the
                            fees for publications "unethically
high", as the board described it. The members
of the board want to start a new journal.

Yet most universities in Germany do not have access
to Elsevier's journals at all. This is due to the
                            fact that an alliance
of German science organisations had tried to
establish nationwide licences with Elsevier. An
agreement was reached with the other two major
publishers (Wiley and Springer Nature), but
negotiations with Elsevier ceased in 2018 in a
dispute. Elsevier then blocked the universities'
access to its journals. Since last year,
                            negotiations are
taking place again – but so far without any
                            noticeable results.
                          - Universities are usually located in large cities
and often have little contact with rural areas. The
                            new
                                project "Heimspiel Wissenschaft" („Home
game for science“) wants to change that: Researchers
are asked to go back to their rural hometowns and
talk about their research there: What are they
researching and what does it have to do with all our

                        News
                          from University of Jena

                          - Prof. Walter
Rosenthal, President of University of Jena, was
elected as the new President of the German
Rectors' Conference (HRK) on 09 May. The HRK
is one of the most important organisations
representing the interests of higher education
institutions in Germany. Rosenthal will initially
only hold the new office on a part-time basis and
will continue to serve as President of the
University of Jena until his succession in Jena is
                            arranged.

                          - For 16
                            years now, the so-called "Thuringia
                                Monitor" is being conducted, a
representative survey of Thuringian citizens on
their political attitudes. A key finding this year:
Satisfaction with democracy and trust in state
                            institutions fell
to their lowest level in 16 years. The survey
is carried out by the Jena Institute for Political
Science. In a pilot phase, it is currently being
assessed how such a survey could also be implemented
at the federal level as a "Germany Monitor".

                          - Two news for healthier working at the
university of Jena: 1. In the library, you can now borrow
foldable and portable table tops which allow
you to work in a standing position, so-called
"Standys" (Photo above: Aleksandra Mincheva). The
"Standys" are an alternative to the "Walkolutions"
set up last year. 2. At Campus Ernst-Abbe-Platz, a drinking
water fountain was officially opened at the
end of May. Opposite the university shop, there is
now the possibility to fill your own drinking
bottles with water. If the fountain is popular, more
                            locations will be added.

                          - Since the beginning of May, the Deutschlandticket
is available, which allows you to use local
public transport throughout Germany. From June, it
is now possible for enrolled doctoral candidates to
                            "upgrade"
their semester ticket in a subscription model.
You have to pay an extra 22,07 Euro per month for
this. The subscription can be cancelled by the 10th
                            of each month.

                        Latest
                          News from Jena and Thuringia

                          - From 31 May to 04 June, a mobile 360-degree
planetarium show will stop at the theatre
square. During the day, there will be insights into
the latest astronomical findings from the region
every half hour. If the weather is good, sunspots
can be observed. In the evening, various
lectures (in German) will take place. After
that, the show will tour 15 more cities. (Photo:

                          - The
book "Der Osten: Eine westdeutsche Erfindung" (The
East: A West German Invention) has caused a stir in
                            the feuilletons
during the last weeks. In it, literature
professor Dirk Oschmann explains that East
Germany is a West German projection screen for
everything that they themselves do not want to be.
East Germany was also treated like a colony and had
no say in the public discourse about itself. The
book is currently number 1 on the Spiegel bestseller
                            list. Oschmann will be giving
a reading at the Volksbad on 26 June.
