University Health Management regularly offers MHFA first aider courses for employees and students. After completing the course, participants can decide whether they would like to be listed as active first aiders. Active first aiders receive regular professional supervision in which they can reflect on their work as first aiders in a group and under the guidance of a qualified person.

The University of Jena cooperates with the MHFA first aider program of the Central Institute of Mental Health Mannheim.  An explanation of the idea behind the program and its implementation in Jena can be found in this articleExternal link on the Almameta.de portal.

The MHFA First Aid Program of the Central Institute of Mental Health Mannheim

  • What is the MHFA First Aid Program?

More than 40 percent of the German population experience a mental disorder requiring treatment at least once in their lives. Although many of those affected are in our immediate environment, this topic still triggers uncertainty, prejudices and fears, which is why prevention and destigmatization are important in this area.

This is where the MHFA First Aiders program comes in. The MHFA Mental Health First Aid course was developed based on the successful model for first aid for physical illnesses and trains lay people to become mental health first aiders in 12 hours.

In addition to theoretical knowledge, concrete first aid measures for developing mental health problems and acute mental health crises are learned and reinforced through practical exercises.

The MHFA first aid course improves knowledge about mental health, reduces stigmatizing behaviour, increases confidence in one's own ability to help and strengthens one's own mental health.

  • The aim of the MHFA first aid courses?

Empowering adults to provide mental health first aid to their loved ones, colleagues or friends by enabling them to recognize, understand and respond to signs of mental distress. The courses also provide added value for educational institutions, businesses, primary care providers and many other organizations.
