The hat contains the pictures of doctorand and group members and the logo of the institute and university. On top of the hat, some special symbols are shown. The solar module on flexible PET foil indicates the main topic of the research called organic solar cells prepared by organic molecules is shown in the small vials. On the left side, small tips were always used to coat the substrates in the lab to prepare the small area solar cells; 3 small solar cells are shown on the lower right corner. Coffee and cigarettes are the most relaxing elements during the break to get relief from the stress. Finally, the two flags (Germany and Bangladesh) are shown on the corner of the hat.

Phylogenetic and biochemical analysis of Actinobacteria isolated from fungus-growing termites

Beschreibung / Description:

Thema meiner Doktorarbeit war es zu untersuchen wie Pilz-züchtende Termiten (Macrotermes natalensis) ihren Pilzgarten frei von Pathogenen und invasiven Arten halten und welche Rolle dabei Aktinobakterien spielen. Die Termiten leben in Termitenhügeln, welche unter anderem durch ihre schiere Größe das Bild der südafrikanischen Savanne prägen. Auf meinem Doktorhut ist dieser „Termitenhügel“ zentrales Thema und thront in der Mitte. Ein Pumpmechanismus ermöglicht es, den „Termitenhügel“ zu vergrößern. Eine etwaige andere Interpretation des „Termitenhügels“, die sich dem Betrachter eventuell aufdrängen, überlasse ich jedem selbst. Auf der rechten Seite kann man eine Termite erkennen die den „Termitenhügel“ erklimmt. Da die von mir untersuchten Termiten zunächst in Südafrika gesammelt werden müssen, hatte ich im Rahmen meiner Doktorarbeit die Möglichkeit, Forschungsreisen nach Südafrika zu unternehmen. Ein zentraler Punkt dieser Forschungsreisen war neben dem Sammeln von Proben auch das Kennenlernen der südafrikanischen Fauna. Am eindrucksvollsten war dabei der Besuch eines Löwenreservats. Dieses Erlebnis ist auf dem Hut ebenfalls in Form einer Filzpuppe meiner selbst in enger Verbundenheit mit einem Löwen festgehalten. Aktinobakterien produzieren eine Vielzahl verschiedener Naturstoffe, um potenziell neue Naturstoffe zu isolieren, kultivierte ich die Aktinobakterien und extrahierte anschließend die Bakterienkulturen. Verewigt finden sich diese Extraktionen in Form von Petrischalen, Eppis, Falcons und Pipettenspitzen. Ergänzt wird dies durch ein Molekülmodell eines neuen Naturstoffs, der während meiner Arbeit entdeckt wurde. Um die nötige Ruhe während meiner Arbeit zu gewährleisten waren Zigarettenpausen unabdingbar und finden damit auch Platz auf meinem Hut. Damit ein Organismus (und damit eben auch ein Doktorand) arbeitsfähig bleibt, ist die Zufuhr hoch-kalorischer Nahrungsmittel ein absolutes Muss. Da ich auf diesem Gebiet eher ein Pragmatiker bin habe ich die Energiezufuhr hauptsächlich durch die repetitive Aufnahme von Nudeln gedeckt. Dies führte zu einer allgemeinen Heiterkeit innerhalb der Arbeitsgruppe. Konsequenterweise finden deshalb auch Nudeln auf meinem Doktorhut einen Platz. Da das Leben nicht nur aus Arbeit besteht, habe ich mich während meiner Freizeit intensiv mit Volleyball auseinandergesetzt, es ist deshalb nur logisch das sich auch Volleybälle auf meinem Hut wiederfinden und sich vortrefflich in das Gesamtbild einfügen. Ich möchte an dieser Stelle noch einmal all den kreativen Köpfen danken, die diesen Doktorhut ermöglicht haben.

“Staphylococcus aureus pathogenesis: The role of different host cell types during the passage from sepsis to chronic osteomyelitis  

Beschreibung / Description:

I did my PhD project at medical microbiology and work with S. aureus and bone cells, that why staph family and the bone.

I am from Spain, that’s why the color of the cord. It is represented how I arrive to Jena by plane and the different countries I have been traveling during my PhD. I love clothes and this is exactly how the closet from my house looks like. I also love cactus and I am addicted to sushi. I do pole dancing and this is me doing up-side down moves.

The fossil it is an old ginger that I kept on my desk and my colleagues were making fun of me for not throwing it away, one day it disappear and I was already sad that it was lost. Surprisingly it was on my hat (thanks god!). The rat is an internal joke.

I hate the sound of timers, this makes me angry. And my colleagues were so nice to decorate my hat with timers all around. In the front, there is a traditional meme that we have used for all the hats before. In the sites, they put all the words that I have said wrong “in a funny way” in German, like: Knollnudelen instead of Knödel.

Establishment of “Aspergillosis-on-a-chip”, a novel disease model to study Aspergillus fumigatus infections at the air-liquid interface in human lung alveolus.

Beschreibung / Description: my friends use their creativity to create the most meaningful hat that presents my thesis works and also some of my “images” :)

• a creative “representation” of a human lung made of bubble sheet stuck on a pink background
• on a far-right corner, there is a microfluidic lung model (the platform which I used to establish my infection model): the model has a blue base and a transparent top where you can see through and realize fungal cells inside (filamentous structure with green dots)
• there is a Zeiss microscope on the top corner, which I used to performed 3D imaging of my fungal cells. Stick to the microscope is the fungal cell with a big green “head”, a filamentous green “body” spreading out across the hat and green “spores” coming out from the head.
• on the left corner, there is me cycling in my white lab coat; this is rather a funny posture on the bike (which, of course, is not how I ride a bike ;-)). Next to the bike is a tiny and intricate artwork representing a bowl of “Pho”, my usual quick lunch before afternoon works :) …
• at the center of the hat is the main focus of my works: the battlefield between human innate immune cells and fungi (the beautiful golden flower-like structure). This battlefield is sometimes filmed by me in real time (using live-cell imaging). On the bottom corner, there is a petri dish with both human cells and fungal inside, representing my work on phagocytosis.
• there is also a small “doll” with a cute woolen hat and a very thick blue coat representing me (who born in a tropical land) in harsh winter in Germany :)

“Assessing Ecohydrological Process Dynamics under Climate Change in the Atlantic Rainforest of Southeast Brazil”

Beschreibung / Description:

In my PhD work I assessed ecohydrological process dynamics under climate change in the Atlantic Rainforest in Southeast Brazil, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. For this purpose, I implemented climate stations and measured river runoff to generate high resolution databases within the Atlantic Rainforest, the Mata Atlântica. My hat shows this unique forest and biodiversity hotspot with trees and animals, such as snakes. It also shows my colleague, Santiago and me measuring in the river and close to a climate station that we installed. It needs to be said that the resemblance of Santiago and myself with the Lego miniatures is striking and anybody who knows Santiago and me acknowledges this right away. I lived there for over a year, so of course I did not miss Carnival in Rio de Janeiro and dancing Samba, which I loved. Hence, the Samba ladies represent Carnival. Of course, it would be rude to not love the beach and Caipirinha, which was therefore considered by the cosmopolitan construction team ; )

The most outstanding feature are the implemented LEDs, which represent the data points of installed monitoring equipment. It needs to be said that so many things can go wrong when measuring your own data that it is like a light in the dark being able to collect data. In addition, the construction team knows me very well, because I love and collect luminescent things. Besides, the hat has a light switch and the LEDs are chargeable via USB. These high-quality LEDs shining through the underground make a wonderful lamp out of the hat, which currently decorates my living room. It shows that the construction team of the hat is very experienced in implementing and maintaining running systems.

A memorable event during my PhD-time was the soccer World cup in 2014 and the famous game, which led to the 7:1 victory for the German team and the loss for the Brazilian team. We could feel the shock for the country during our next stays and almost any conversation or comment ended up to be “sete a um” related. From there on caution was needed when presenting numbers. The hat commemorates this circumstance as a constant background noise.   

Further, the materials and fabrics used are all high-quality and almost everything on this hat is self-made, including the hat itself, the cord, the ground, and the elevation model. Paintings and special adaptations were also made, such as the chargeable light and light switch, sand, silicon water and of course Brazilian colors.  

 Thanks to all my friends and colleagues as well as their families who all helped to create this amazing and unique PhD hat!

Hydrogeological connectivity and endolithic habitats of Upper Muschelkalk limestone-mudrock alternations

Beschreibung / Description:

Meinen Doktorhut schmückt ein liebevoll gebasteltes Geländemodell meines Untersuchungsgebietes im Hainich. Die einfallenden Gesteinsschichten des Oberen Muschelkalks, Bodenbedeckung, ein Erdfall, verschiedene Landnutzungen, insbesondere der Buchenmischwald mit Laubstreu – alles ist wo es hingehört. Ein Wegweiser weist zu meinen anderen Tatorten in Jena und zur Forschungsbohrung in Erfurt und das wesentliche Transportmittel, der Pickup, ist auch dabei. Während ich in Arbeitskluft nur Photos schieße (Danke, liebe KollegInnen ;-), müht sich mein Lego-Kollege fleißig am Bohrgerät ab. Beleuchtet sind zum einen das Kabellichtlot zur Messung des Wasserstands in der reagenzrohr-verrohrten Grundwassermessstelle, als auch die Fließbahnen des Grundwassers. Hybrid materials based on water-soluble polymers – preparation and application in sensing and photocatalysis

Beschreibung / Description:

I joined the AG-Schacher in 2017 and I finished my PhD 2021. I was working on hybrid materials based mostly on polymers. I self-assembled the organic-inorganic hybrid materials in a variety of architectures and my Doctor Hat shows prissily those unique structures from octopus to worm and spherical morphology. Of course, some of my hobbies and equipment (which have broken by me) are obviously there. The last but not least, my German language skill is also presented as text to remind me how my Deutsch language was developing.

Electron Irradiation Induced Synthesis of Molecular Two-Dimensional Materials

Beschreibung / Description:

An dieser Stelle möchte ich mich bei meinen Freunden und Kollegen bedanken, die mir diesen einmaligen Doktorhut gebastelt haben. Die detailgetreue Abbildung zeigt meine Doktorandenzeit, welche ich gerne mit ein paar Schlagworten erklären möchte:

1. Die Grundplatte des Hutes zeigt eine Honigwabenstruktur, welche das Material Graphen (eine einzelne Lage Graphit) symbolisiert. Dies zeigt bereits in welchem Fachgebiet diese Arbeit geschrieben wurde, die Herstellung und Untersuchung von zweidimensionalen Materialien.
2. Meine Proben wurden häufig in dieser Maschine präpariert und vermessen. Eigentlich bedarf es keiner Erklärung zu dieser „Ultrahochvakuum Multianalyseanlage“, aber in aller Kürze ein paar Worte: Nach der Probenherstellung mittels Gasphasenabscheidung standen Röntgen- und UV-Photoelektronenspektroskopie, niederenergetische Elektronenbeugung, Rasterkraft- und Rastertunnelmikroskopie zur Untersuchung, sowie Elektronen- und Ionenkanonen zur Materialbearbeitung bereit. Also eine „Eierlegendewollmilchsau“, wie ein Professor in den Vorlesungen dazu sagte. ;)
3. Das Werkzeug und die Kupferdichtungen zeigen, dass solche wissenschaftlichen Geräte auch aufgebaut und repariert werden mussten. Selbst schrauben im Labor macht doch (fast) jeder Physiker gerne. ;)
4. Ein solches Periodensystem hängt bei uns im Büro. Dort wurde jedes Element, welches wir mittels Röntgenphotoelektronenspektroskopie gemessen haben, abgehakt. Die radioaktiven Elemente verbleiben als Aufgabe für die Zeit nach der Promotion…
5. Hier sind zwei aromatische Moleküle zu sehen. Mit diesen Molekülen habe ich mich hauptsächlich in meiner Promotion befasst. Insbesondere habe ich untersucht, wie die Bindungen durch den Beschuss mit Elektronen (dargestellt durch die roten Kugeln) gebrochen wurden…
6. …Demzufolge bin ich dann auch hier zu sehen, wie ich mit der Elektronenkanone auf die Moleküle schieße. :)
7. Nun geht es zu meinen Hobbys. Der Flügel, die Orgel und alle weiteren Musiksymbole zeigen deutlich, womit ich mich in meiner Freizeit am liebsten beschäftige.
8. Ansonsten war ich auch häufig beim Hochschulsport anzutreffen, wahlweise in Badminton oder Basketballkursen. Die Flagge von Arminia Bielefeld verweist dann auf meine ostwestfälische Heimat, wo zwar nicht immer hochklassiger, aber doch jederzeit leidenschaftlicher Fußball gespielt (oder besser gesagt gekämpft) wird. Ein Besuch auf der Bielefelder Alm war selten langweilig und nichts für schwache Nerven.
9. Ein bisschen Farbe kommt hier schließlich noch durch meinen Garten ins Spiel. Es gibt doch nichts Besseres den Tag dort beim Grillen mit einem schönen Bier in der Hand zu beenden.

Genomics-Driven Discovery of Natural Products from Symbiotic Burkholderia Species

Beschreibung / Description:

In my PhD thesis I investigated symbiotic bacteria that dwell inside fungal hosts and ones that live inside insects. Both partners exchange a variety of chemical molecules. Much as my studies unveiled a variety of these mediators, my PhD hat shows me in my small laboratory bubble looking at the things we cannot see with the human eye. It is also a reference to my “Forscherdrang”; how I would like to travel to the stars with my research spaceship (inclusive eco-friendly filter engine) and investigate all the things nature and space have in store for us (illustrated as self-designed monsters by my coworkers). The hat shows a variety of TV, movie and game references revealing a bit more of my nerdiness that my group had the pleasure of experiencing during the last years. It is finished by a quote from Dumbledore stating it is our choices that define us and not so much our abilities – which is the best way of describing my way up now.

Is the right anterior superior temporal sulcus involved in speaker-identity recognition? A study using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)

Beschreibung/Description:

Neuroimaging studies have revealed regions in the human brain that respond preferentially to human voices. These regions are mostly located along the superior temporal gyrus and sulcus (STG/S). It has been hypothesized that the right anterior STG/S is crucial for voice-identity recognition because the amplitudes of anterior STG/S neuroimaging responses correlate positively with voice-identity recognition performance. Here, my aim was to test this hypothesis by using non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tdcs) in a randomized double-blind shamcontrolled within-participants design. 24 neurotypical participants were familiarized with four unfamiliar speakers? Voices and were then tested on voice-identity and speech recognition. While performing the voice-identity and speech recognition test, participants received anodal, cathodal, and sham tdcs on three different days, respectively. As hypothesized, voice-identity recognition was improved when applying anodal tdcs to the right anterior STG/S as compared to cathodal and sham. However, this was only the case on day three. My results support the hypothesis that the right anterior STG/S is behaviourally relevant for identifying a speaker's voice.

„Do Emotional Faces Attract Attention? An Investigation of the Boundary Conditions of Selection Biases in Favor of Emotional Facial Stimuli”     

Beschreibung / Description:

Während meiner Doktorarbeit habe ich mich mit dem Thema: “Aufmerksamkeit auf emotionale Gesichter“ beschäftigt und dazu eine umfassende Serie an Reaktionszeitexperimenten am PC durchgeführt. Dabei ging es darum, inwiefern emotionale Gesichter im Vergleich zu neutralen Gesichtern visuelle Aufmerksamkeit auf sich ziehen. Der Hut bildet aber nicht nur diese Forschung, sondern auch das bunte Doktorandinnenleben drum herum ab. Von lieben Kolleg/inne/n über meine Leidenschaft für das Nähen, meine Kinder und mein neues Projekt, die Evaluation der Fortbildung „Ich kann kochen!“, die mich zugleich zu einer ernährungsbezogenen Lebensveränderung geführt hat. Man beachte besonders: Die originelle Knoblauchknolle als Quaste ;-) Ganz herzlichen Dank an dieser Stelle noch einmal an meine lieben Kolleg/inne/n, die sich so viel Mühe mit diesem schönen Hut gegeben haben!

Structural evolution of the Taiwan fold-and-thrust belt gleaned from balanced cross sections and tectono-metamorphic studies in the Central Range

Beschreibung / Description:

If you ask me what the best gift during my PhD study is, of course I would say it is the PhD hat. This hat was made by our mechanic master, Benjamin Schmitz, one of my colleagues in the Structural Geology Group, Institute of Geological Sciences, Uni. Jena. He made all unforgettable memories together in a humorous way. Once we saw the hat or played with the hat, we would have an uncontrollable urge to laugh.

1) Science part: I made three huge cross-sections of Taiwan island in my PhD study and analyzed carbonaceous materials with Raman laser. The designers set a laser pointer to a piece of black coal which is carbonaceous material.

2) Party mode: People can switch the “toothpick” controlling the “Party Mode” on and off, which is my 2020 Christmas T-shirt :)

3) Geology field works: We spent one month in the Alpen field in 2017. The designers set me as a princess who travelled within the Alpen streams and mountains. I was a copilot in geology mapping courses in 2017 & 2018, sitting in the front car. Unfortunately, I guided the driver off the map ;)

4) Rhinoceros horn: I was having Chinese traditional herb medicine which is in an unpleasant smell. I failed to describe what the medicine powder is made of. They misunderstood and pretended to be upset with the dead Rhinoceros in the medicine. Everyone was making fun with it.

5) ICE from Jena to Kiel: My boyfriend was also a PhD student in Kiel and I visited him via Deutsche Bahn once a month. The hat designer made himself as a ticket checker because he currently is working in the DB.
