Programme summary

The German-taught master’s programme 'Sport Governance: Organisation and Regulation in Sport' is an advanced university course. It imparts in-depth knowledge of national and international organisational structures of sport as well as its links to market, politics and society. In addition to theoretical knowledge, practically applicable knowledge is imparted in the course, which is realized, inter alia, through project work, case study processing and a specialist excursion.

The four-semester master’s programme is interdisciplinary. The individual modules can be assigned to the four key areas of sport governance:

  • Organisational structures in sport
  • Society and sport
  • Politics and sport
  • Market and sport

In the first part of the course (in the 1st and partly in the 2nd semester), the focus is on imparting knowledge about fundamental interdisciplinary approaches and content. Building on this, in the second part of the course (partly in the 2nd and all of the 3rd semester) there is an in-depth study of the specific, sports-related fields of the four thematic focal points of the course (see above). The master's thesis follows in the final semester.

Special features

The main special feature of the programme is its interdisciplinary approach. Against the background of current trends, the master's programme enables its graduates to analyse, link and answer economic, political, legal and social questions in sport. Due to this thematically innovative orientation, this is a unique master’s programme in Germany.

Career opportunities

Due to the interdisciplinary character of the course, graduates have a wide range of fields of activities, in particular:

  • in the sports sector (e.g. sports associations and clubs)
  • in sports-related areas of the market sector (e.g. corporate social responsibility, sustainability, marketing or sponsoring)
  • in politics (e.g. state sports support, international sports relations)
  • in public administrations (e.g. sports administration, sports offices)
  • in civil society and development organisations

On the other hand, the basis for subsequent scientific qualifications (e.g. doctorate) is laid with the completion of the master’s degree.
