Programme content

The subject of economics/law at lower and upper secondary schools in Thuringia aims to familiarise students with the foundations of our legal and economic system, which is based on special social values (in particular fundamental rights, market economy, private autonomy, protection of freedom). Learners should also be competent|on a self-employed|on a self-employed basis to explore the background to socio-economic concepts, categorise them and develop their own position on them. Only on this basis can young people acquire the ability to act in times of multiple challenges (in particular climate and environmental protection, migration, digitalisation, demographic change) and the associated social transformations, to make future-oriented and responsible personal and socially relevant decision|ruling|judgements for their own life planning and design.

Why study in Jena?

For a long time, the Free State of Thuringia was one of the few federal states to implement economics and law as a compulsory subject in the curriculum at lower secondary level. Many federal states (e.g. introduction of the subject of labour and economics in Baden-Württemberg) have followed this example in the last decade. The respective ministries responsible in the individual federal states therefore generally recognise|to credit a corresponding subject for trainee teachers.

What can you do after your studies?

Possible occupational fields:

  • General education: The typical route into school practice is via the preparatory service (traineeship). In this phase, you will further develop your practical teaching skills on the basis of your degree.

The teaching degree completed in Thuringia is recognised|to credit in all other federal states upon formal request to the respective Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. You can apply to the Ministries of Education and Cultural Affairs of other federal states both for the preparatory service (Referendariat) and for employment in the teaching profession (after completing the second state examination).
