Artificial Intelligence in Education: Potentials, Risks and Approaches in the Chinese Academic Discourse

Prof. Dr Shasha Li obtained her PhD from the University of Freiburg, Germany. Since 2018, she has held an Associate Professorship in the Faculty of German Studies at Tongji University in Shanghai, established under the Pujiang Talent Programme, part of China’s national excellence initiative.
Her main research area is data-driven discourse analysis. She leads several research projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China and the Shanghai Social Science Fund, among others, and has published numerous academic articles in leading journals (SSCI, CSSCI, A&HCI, etc.).

In her lecture, Prof. Li will present findings from a self-compiled corpus examining the discourse on artificial intelligence (AI) within the Chinese education system. After outlining the development and key themes of this discourse, she will offer an in-depth analysis and interpretation of the perceived opportunities and risks associated with AI in education. The talk concludes with an overview of proposed strategies by Chinese scholars, illustrated through concrete examples.
