Crises, conflicts and wars are all too often the focus of the news. This often negative journalistic reporting leads some people to become news-weary or even avoid news altogether. In addition, many people are increasingly informing themselves via social media. How should journalism react to the changes in media consumption, what can, may or must it expect of its audience and what must journalism achieve nowadays? Is it enough to describe grievances or should journalists concentrate on researching the background and contexts, as well as possible solutions and inspiring examples - in other words, more constructive journalism? What contribution can local journalism make to participation, development and coexistence in the city?
In cooperation with Dr Elisa Hofmann (Institute of Communication Science) and the Ernst Abbe Library, the OpenFORUM Jena invites all interested citizens to a debate on the limits of traditional journalism and the possibilities of constructive journalism. The interactive citizens' dialogue will be moderated by RiffReporters Alexander Mäder and Rainer Kurlemann. All interested parties, regardless of age, profession or previous knowledge, are cordially invited to discuss current challenges and solutions in journalism.
OpenFORUM Jena is a joint project of Friedrich Schiller University and the City of Jena. The aim is to strengthen the dialogue with citizens in participatory and innovative formats in order to develop new ideas for exchanging knowledge and living together. The initiative is funded by the Stifterverband and coordinated by the Unit for Network and Cooperation Management at the University of Jena.
Registration is not necessary, admission is free.
