The Modular IP Education Framework (MIPEF) is an international continuing professional development programme run by the European Patent Office (EPO). It provides practical knowledge on intellectual property (IP), patents and innovation.
The MIPEF programme comprises three courses across Europe. Two courses are currently on offer at Friedrich Schiller University Jena:
- Entry Level – Fundamentals of intellectual property, patents and innovation
- Advanced Level – Advanced Topics in Patent Protection, Technology Transfer and IP Commercialisation

Why is MIPEF worth attending?
Whether you’re conducting research, setting up a business or planning to work in industry or academia later on – knowledge of intellectual property is now one of the key skills required for successful innovation.
With MIPEF, you’ll learn
- how inventions are patented,
- how to use patents strategically,
- how research findings can be commercially exploited,
- the role that intellectual property plays in technology transfer,
- how innovations are successfully brought to market.
The course was developed by the European Patent Office (EPO) and combines scientific principles with numerous practical examples from the world of innovation.

The modules can be completed at your own pace and are easily compatible with study or research agreements.
What are you investing in?
MIPEF has been specifically designed for people who wish to combine their studies or research with continuing education.
You will spend
- around 75 hours of study time spread over several weeks,
- completing five online modules,
- short knowledge quizzes after each module,
- optional participation in live masterclasses,
- and a final open-book examination.
You’ll study in a complete online environment and can set your own pace. The live sessions are optional and are designed to help you consolidate the material. They are not recorded.
What do you get?
Upon successful completion, you will have acquired in-depth expertise in the intellectual property and innovation subject area.
In particular, you will gain knowledge of
- patents and the patenting process,
- the protection and enforcement of protection rights,
- technology transfer,
- IP commercialisation,
- innovation management,
- Practical application of intellectual property rights.
Upon passing the final examination, you will receive a certificate from the European Patent Office (EPO). At certain institutions of higher education, successful completion of the course may also be recognized for academic credit.
