Two mitochondria
Image: Adobestock/Dr_Microbe
Until recently it was assumed that mitochondria in mammalian cells operated at approximately the standard body temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. However, our recent data using different types of fluorescent reporter indicates a mitochondrial temperature of 50 degrees or above. In this lecture I shall present the evidence for this finding, the possible counter-arguments, and the consequences of elevated mitochondrial temperature for cellular and organismal physiology.
