Programme content

In Jena, you can study Italian as a third subject according to the Jena Model for German Grammar School Teacher Training (Gymnasium). You will learn to teach Italian as a school subject and acquire the professional competences required of an Italian teacher. The programme focuses on developing and consolidating language skills and acquiring didactic and methodological knowledge and skills. You will study the Italophone cultural area from a linguistic, literary and cultural studies perspective and will be confronted with concrete examples of use that will pave the way for your practical work.

The university offers courses (offered) in Italian as a third subject, enabling you to complete your degree within 7 semesters (standard period of study|regular programme length). A total of 75 credit points (ECTS)|ECTS credits must be earned. These are made up of the discipline modules (60 CP) and the preparatory modules for the additional examination or an examination in another subject (15 CP: 10 CP subject examinations, 5 CP subject didactics examination). Structure

The subjects Astronomy, German as a second and foreign language and Italian can be studied as a third subject and completed with the additional examination. It is not possible to study these subjects as a first or second subject in Thuringia.

Admission to the extension programme is subject to having passed the first state examination for the teaching profession. However, it is possible to start studying the third subject if at least 170 credit points from the undergraduate teacher training programme at the University of Jena can be proven|evidence of this and the school placement semester has been completed. In this case, a double degree programme for the corresponding subject must be applied for.

The preparatory work placement and the school placement semester are not required for the additional subject. Furthermore, no seminar paper to be written at home (final year project|thesis|dissertation) is required.

A secure job! The prospects for teachers are currently rather favourable, but vary regionally and depending on the school type and subject combination. With a degree in teaching Italian as a third subject, you will be able to significantly increase your chances of gaining a professional foothold.

Italian is offered as a subject at various grammar schools in Thuringia, so there is a constant demand for Italian teachers. With a teaching degree, you can first apply for a traineeship (Referendariat). After completing the second state examination, you can apply for employment in the teaching profession. The teaching degree completed in Thuringia is recognised|to credit in all other federal states upon formal request to the respective Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. Admission requirements

  • Enrollment in the extension program

    The following may be admitted to the postgraduate program at the University of Jena

    • anyone who has passed the first state examination for the teaching profession at grammar schools;
    • anyone who has passed the first state examination for the teaching profession at vocational schools;
    • anyone who has a university degree as a graduate teacher and is employed as a teacher at a grammar school in Thuringia;
    • anyone who has already completed the practical semester as a student teacher [at the University of Jena] and can provide evidence of at least 170 CP from the undergraduate teacher training course (“Jena Model”) or has successfully passed the intermediate examination;
    • who has passed an examination recognized as equivalent by the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (for more information, please contact the responsible ministry).

    Applicants with a First State Examination or a teaching-related Bachelor's or Master's degree from other federal states require recognition of equivalence from the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.
