Programme content

In the Bachelor's degree programme in English and American Studies, you will acquire basic knowledge and methodological skills in the subject areas of English Linguistics and English and American Literature. Central subjects are the scientific description and analysis of the English language as well as the scientific examination of the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world (focus on Great Britain and North America).
The study programme is designed to build on this. After a two-semester introduction to the individual subject areas, you can choose from a wide range of compulsory electives whether you want to study the entire subject or specialise in one area (English linguistics, English and American Studies, American Studies or Medieval Studies). The degree programme is rounded off by a demanding, progressively designed practical language course.

The Bachelor's degree is the first professional qualification. The standard period of study|regular programme length is six semesters in total, during which various forms of courses (e.g. seminars, lectures or tutorials) are offered for the individual modules.

A multi-subject Bachelor's degree consists of a major subject with 120 credit points (abbreviation: LP / 1 LP = 30 hours of attendance, preparation and follow-up work|follow-up activity, learning and assessed coursework and examinations) and a supplementary subject with 60 LP.

Why study in Jena?

  • The Institute of English and American Studies offers a flexible study programme with a wide range of options for individual specialisation.
  • The integration of current approaches from internal research and teaching as well as from other disciplines, such as communication, cognitive and media studies, is an integral part of the teaching programme.
  • In addition to the intensive practical language training, the Bachelor's degree programme is characterised by the fact that almost all course|classes are held in English. On the one hand, this promotes language competence in English in a discourse-orientated manner, and on the other, it creates a higher degree of interculturality in everyday study life, which should also increasingly appeal to international applicants.

What can you do after your studies?
