The WelcomeCafé for new students is open from 29.09.-17.10.2025, Mon-Fri from 3-5pm in the International Centre (Johannisplatz 26). We will talk to you about leisure activities alongside your studies. What activities are available inside and outside the university? The WelcomeCafé team will provide tips and answer questions on the subject.

Presentation of the Bachelor and Master Biogeosciences degree programmes

We will briefly introduce you to the degree programmes and you can ask both teaching staff and students any questions you may have about the structure of your studies or other topics relating to studying and student life. Typical for Geosciences students, who are often on the move, there is also the opportunity to have lunch outside in the institute's garden - with self-catering. The lunch break is a great way to get to know new colleagues. In the afternoon, the programme continues with current students.

If you live in Jena, you must have been to the Landgrave! That's exactly what we'll do with you: together we'll hike through the city's surroundings and enjoy the view over Jena.
We will be walking for about 2 hours - the perfect opportunity to meet new people and have good conversations in a relaxed environment, far away from university and time table stress ;-). You don't need any special hiking experience, but there will be a longer ascent at the beginning and some stairs to walk. Be sure to take something to drink with you and remember to wear sturdy shoes.
If the weather forecast is bad, we will inform you via Telegram whether the hike will take place.

Optional: We spend a cosy evening playing board and card games with you. Perfect opportunity to get to know other fellow students!

We would like to invite you to a guided tour of the institute. Together with Dr Thimo Jacob Brestel, you will have the opportunity to get to know the institute better and gain a first insight into your new surroundings.

After the tour of the institute, we will continue with a guided tour of the city at 11.30 am. Together we will guide you through the city, show you the most important university buildings, the library and other central contact points for your studies. This will give you a good overview and orientation in your new surroundings right from the start.

Depending on your time and interests, you will then have the opportunity to visit the city museum or the botanical garden together.

To round off our programme, we would like to take you on a hike up the Jenzig together. Once at the top, we will not only enjoy the beautiful view over Jena while bringing our own provisions, but also learn a little about the exciting History of the Jenzig: there is proof|evidence of a settlement on the mountain during various periods of prehistory and early history.

Please remember to wear sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for the weather - after all, we are travelling in October. We will probably take the tram from the city centre to the starting point of the hike. We will let you know the exact meeting point in the course of the STET.

Joint afternoon with the FSR Romance Studies

The lectures of the foundation studies|undergraduate studies are accompanied by working groups in which the legal case-solving technique is taught. Registration takes place via the electronic schedule of classes »Friedolin« and is possible until 26 October 2025.

All working groups start in the 3rd week of lectures.

Meeting of the entire new cohort for the first basic training in the module »Speech training«.

The tutorial teaches first-year students of all Law degree programmes legal methodology using practical cases and aims to familiarise them with the correct approach and use of legal media in Law studies.

The first two thematic blocks of the course (expert opinion style and subsumption technique) will take place on 20 October 2025, 14:00 - 18:00.

Further dates are planned for 12.01.2026 (3rd date; crash course for final exams) and 19.02.2026 (4th date; seminar papers).

This event will take a closer look at the hurdles, but also the opportunities that the decision|ruling|judgement in favour of studying holds for first-generation students. People who are themselves the first in their family to study or have studied will share their experiences, draw attention to support programmes and provide an overview of options for financing studies, such as BAföG or scholarships.
