Tiananmen 1989 - 35th May
a day that tends to be ignored in official Chinese memory
Published:
‘35 May’ is the title of a children's book by Erich Kästner - in China it stands for the events surrounding 4 June - the day on which the People's Liberation Army was deployed to clear the square in front of the Gate of Heavenly Peace.
While the year 1989 stands for peaceful revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall in German history, this year tends to be ignored in official Chinese memory;
To commemorate this, there is now a ‘museum page’ on the events surrounding 4 June 1989 in China. The target group is the Chinese-speaking public.
