A fast Internet connection is more important today than ever before. However, speed alone is not everything. It's a bit like road traffic: if there are a lot of vehicles travelling in the same direction on a two-lane motorway, what good is the fastest car?
As a member of the DFN, the University of Jena also obtains a corresponding Internet bandwidth via a redundant supply connection (previously: 2 x 10 Gbps). Due to the current contractual arrangements with the DFN, the bandwidth can be increased for users in a cost-neutral manner in the event of corresponding developments.
Following a resolution at the General Assembly in June 2024, intensive checks were therefore carried out to determine whether this is required for the university and what technical innovations are necessary for this. After various modifications (e.g. to the interfaces), tests and various coordination meetings, the bandwidth was gradually expanded until the beginning of July. 2 x 25 Gbps of bandwidth are now available. (In order to be prepared for further developments, even larger amounts of data were technically taken into account during the expansion).
Advantages of the expansion - when two lanes become four:
- In future, even more devices will be able to go online in parallel.
- Individual connections will tend to be established more quickly.
- As usual, data transfer will be fully symmetrical. (The same bandwidth is available for download and upload).
