General information
The proposed measures must not have commenced before the application was submitted, nor must they have already been funded by other means. If you have submitted your project proposal to another funding body at the same time, or intend to do so, please indicate this on the application form.
Plan realistically. Calculate the costs of the measures for which you are applying so that they are proportionate to your project’s objective.
If you are unsure:
If you are unsure or your questions do not fit into any of the example scenarios presented here, please feel free to contact us before submitting your application.

Do I need to be employed by the University of Jena to be able to submit a proposal?
Not necessarily. The "Gender in Focus" project supports specific research projects at the University of Jena; in other words, the research aspect is crucial. If, for example, you are employed at one of the non-university research institutions in the Jena area and are planning to submit a doctorate at the University of Jena, funding may be available. This also applies to scholarships awarded, for example, by foundations to doctoral candidates.
-
How is the implementation and administration of the funded measures organised?
The implementation and administration of funded initiatives should be carried out as efficiently as possible. Simple projects, such as a one-off grant towards printing costs, are coordinated via the "Gender in Focus" project. You are free to carry out and manage more complex projects on your own responsibility. You will then be allocated a separate PSP element for your project in the SAP system, which you can use to manage the expenditure of funds up to the amount of the grant award yourself. You will receive the necessary information along with the grant award.
-
Can I submit a proposal if I am receiving funding through a third-party-funded project at the University of Jena or at a non-university institute?
Yes. Anyone receiving funding through a third-party-funded project may submit a proposal, but the funding applied for must not relate to activities that are already being funded under that third-party-funded project.
-
Can I submit a project that is intended to help with the preparation, for example, of an application for third-party funding?
Yes, funding for measures that support research is a key focus of the funding program. However, the proposed research project should clearly demonstrate that gender and/or sex are taken into account and incorporated. Transition periods between projects that are not research-related to the call for proposals and do not involve specific measures of their own are not eligible for funding.
-
Can I submit a proposal even if I have already submitted one to another funding body or am planning to submit a parallel proposal?
Yes, provided that transparency is maintained. Please note in your proposal that you are submitting a parallel proposal, if applicable, and inform us without undue delay by email if you have received funding commitments from other sources. As a general rule, projects that are already receiving funding from elsewhere cannot be supported a second time by our funding program.
-
Which measures are eligible for funding?
Feel free to be creative! We support innovative research that is also free to explore unconventional avenues. The range of eligible activities is therefore broad: From travel expenses for academic events (with a contribution from the applicant) and networking, through grants towards printing costs, staff resources for preparing applications and conducting research, as well as for carrying out experiments and interviews, right through to funding fees and accomodation costs for speakers at workshops, lectures and symposia – a great deal is possible, provided it serves your project’s objectives and aligns with our funding criteria.
-
What, in principle, is not eligible for funding?
Measures that do not comply with the FSU’s Hospitality Guidelinespdf, 704 kb · de and the regulations governing the reimbursement of travel expenses (the Thuringian Travel Expenses ActExternal link and the relevant administrative regulationsExternal link) are not eligible for funding. This means, for example, that you cannot include an evening reception in the programme of a planned conference.
Also excluded are all activities that are already receiving funding from other sources, as well as projects aimed exclusively at students.
-
Can I submit a teaching project or a project involving students?
The "Gender in Focus" project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space and can therefore only provide funding to researchers who hold a degree. Consequently, teaching projects (e.g. block seminars) for students cannot be considered. However, formats aimed at researchers (e.g. doctoral candidates or postdocs) that are also open to students are eligible.
-
How do the two funding lines, Research Expert and Research Talent, differ?
The ‘Research Expert’ funding line is aimed at postdocs and established researchers, whilst the ‘Research Talent’ funding line is aimed at doctoral candidates.
If, for example, a project is intended to carry out a doctoral research proposal, the doctoral candidate must submit the proposal, not their supervisor. In the case of collaborative projects, each applicant must describe their specific research contribution in detail.
-
Can I submit a proposal that I have already submitted?
Yes. If a proposal has been rejected, it can be resubmitted – revised if necessary – in the next funding round. If the proposal has already received funding from us, it cannot be considered again. Individuals who have already received funding may also apply with a new project proposal.
