An application for an exchange place is independent of the application for a scholarship.

Application Information for All Countries Worldwide (Excluding North America)

  • Application Deadline

    January 15 for a study abroad program in the following academic year
    Starting in April (allocation of remaining spots) for a study abroad program in the following summer semester

  • Required Application Documents
    • Application form (see the Downloads section under “Forms”)
    • Resume
    • Statement of purpose
    • Proof of student status at the University of Jena (current certificate of enrollment)
    • Letter of recommendation from a university faculty member (Letters of recommendation from faculty members at a former university are also accepted. The letter should include an academic assessment and a recommendation for the study abroad program.) You may use this templatepdf, 184 kb · de
    • Proof of academic progress with grades (Friedolin printout)
    • For Master’s students: Bachelor’s degree certificate
    • Proof of language proficiency (working language and/or national language, at least B2)

    Please submit your application documents as a single PDF file.

  • Application Process

    The application process consists of two steps: First, you apply to the University of Jena for an exchange spot, and if successful, you then apply directly to your preferred host university.

    Srep 1:

    • Submit your application materials to the International Office by January 15
    • List up to 3 preferred host universities in order of priority
    • Decision on placement based on your application materials
    • Written notification of the selection results approximately 4 weeks after the application deadline

    Step 2: (if your application to the University of Jena is successful)

    • Officially accept your place by completing the acceptance form
    •  Nomination to the host university by the International Office
    • Begin the application process at the foreign host university
    • Complete and submit the host university’s university-specific application materials

    The final decision on admission rests with the host university. 

Application Information for North America

  • Application Deadline

    November 30 for the winter semester and summer semester of the following academic year: This applies only to spots allocated by the International Office—in other words, those spots that are open to all fields of study.

    Please contact the program coordinators directly (see the list of contacts) to inquire about the application deadline for the U.S. programs in your department.

  • Application Process

    Step 1:

    • Submit your application materials by November 30 to the International Office or to the designated coordinator (see Contact Information)
    • Indicate your preferred host university or provide a list of several universities ranked by priority

    Step 2:

    • Written invitation to a selection interview lasting approximately 15 minutes, usually conducted in English (typically in January)
    • Places are awarded by the selection committee based on your application materials and the interview
      • Selection is initially based on your preferred partner university; however, your second and third choices will be considered if places are no longer available at your first-choice university.
      • You are expected to be well-informed about all the universities you have selected.
      • In exceptional cases, the selection committee reserves the right to suggest a different study location.
    • Written notification of the selection process results approximately 2 weeks after the interview

    Step 3: (if your application to the University of Jena is successful)

    • Complete and submit the host university’s specific application materials
    • Proof of financial status (e.g., bank statement) and vaccination certificates are often required in addition

    The final decision on admission rests with the host university. 

    The final acceptance letter from the host university, along with the necessary documents for exchange participants to apply for a visa at the U.S. or Canadian embassy, often does not arrive until June.

  • TASSEP - Application Deadline

    January 15 for study abroad programs starting in the following winter semester (beginning in August)

  • TASSEP - Application Process

    Program exclusively for students of the natural sciences (chemistry, physics, biology)!

    Application materials must be submitted to the International Office by January 15. You may list either a single preferred host university or a list of multiple universities in order of priority.

    A Learning Agreement is attached to the application form. This is not required at the time of application. Please fill it out only after you have been accepted.

    Applications will be reviewed and forwarded to TASSEP coordinators in the academic departments. There, a ranking of applicants will be determined. This ranking will then be forwarded via the International Office to the central allocation office of the TASSEP program. The program will attempt to accommodate as many applications as possible. You will receive information about the selection process by the end of February.
